Bird flu 'could kill 150m people'
One question: what can the individual do about it - is there any way of minimising the chances of becoming a statistic? (Locking yourself in your house for 5 years isn't a valid answer.)

I had just written what I thought would be a new thread on this subject, but really didn't know where to put it. The General medical area seemed best, but then it probably would have been deleted - sigh.[&o]
By the way, I clicked on the modern day miracle thing, but couldn't understand - is it linked with bird flu, or is it just a website you like?
Anyway, here is what I wrote this morning. No, you do not have to become a statistic. You can learn to prtoect yourselft metaphyiscally from all contagion and dis-ease. Honestly, we don't even have a human version of this flu - this is all conjecture and fear-mongering. Of course governments need to be alert and take precautions, but to whip everyone up into frenzy of fear when there isn't even anything to be afraid of seems a bit OTT to me.
This morning, the predictions of a global pandemic from mutated bird flu were broadcast to the world.

The most effective antidote I know to all disease is the understanding that there is a higher law than the so-called "laws" of matter. In chapter 12, Christian Science Practice, have a read of pages 390 to 393. The chapter starts off with a discussion of the spiritual qualities we need to enable us to heal through prayer and then goes into the practicalities of it. Here’s a passage from that chapter, where it describes one of the experiments in medicine that were allowed in those days:
Disease arises, like other mental conditions, from association. Since it is a law of mortal mind that certain diseases should be regarded as contagious, this law obtains credit through association,--calling up the fear that creates the image of disease and its consequent manifestation in the body.
This fact in metaphysics is illustrated by the following incident: A man was made to believe that he occupied a bed where a cholera patient had died. Immediately the symptoms of this disease appeared, and the man died. The fact was, that he had not caught the cholera by material contact, because no cholera patient had been in that bed. (p 154)
I’ve certainly caught a cold over the phone (feeling great sympathy for a friend who sounded terrible.) However, on the other hand, when I was alert, hearing the same symptoms over the phone from someone else and mentally treating them as we learn in Christian Science, that person rang me the next morning to say that she was amazed to find that she was completely well, when she had expected to have to take several days off work.
Albert Schweitzer also discovered this mental connection between our fears and the manifestation of them on the body. During his time in Africa. many times, healthy young men would be brought to him in a state of extreme fear, having been told by the witch doctor that they would die if such-and-such happened (I remember once it was if he saw his own blood) and no matter how Schweitzer tried to reason with them, these terrified men still died.
Talking about cholera – have you noticed how, after every disaster, like the tsunami, the hurricanes etc, it is predicted that a cholera epidemic will break out? Now, I don’t know whether it is quick medical preventive measures, or the immediate prayerful preventative metaphysical treatments taken up by people like Christian Scientists and others who understand the mental connection between dis-ease and fearful thinking (or perhaps it’s a bit of both) but these predictions have not come to fruition and neither does this bird flu fear-spreading have to. It is not from God; therefore it has no legitimacy and no power (apart from what we give it by our belief in it.) Full stop.

Well it seems to me that the best, most logical way to avoid this is not to eat poultry in the first place. Prevention is always better than cure.

I don't think that eating poultry is the cause of the mutation between bird 'flu being spread among human populations. Those humans who have caught it have been in close proximity with live birds for most of their days. Like Judy says, it's extremely difficult for humans to catch bird 'flu if they don't work with birds (hens mostly) or have contact with them on a regular basis. Eating a hen requires killing it and the cooking process normally kills viruses.
It's the 'fear factor' again.

Well last night there was a live chat on www.spirituality.com which was recorded and can be listened to any time (it takes an hour) I was impressed as the speaker last had 'flu symptoms 50 years ago and it has not touched her since.
This programme was specifically about praying about the threatened bird flu and how it is possible to protect ourselves through metaphysical understanding. (As I've heard that there is only enough vaccine for government ministers, health care workers and the emergency services, it might be worth listening to!)

15,000 die each Winter from regular flu. Government spokesperson said that with bird flu (if they are prepared... i.e. if it is not this Winter) it will be around 50,000 deaths. If it is this Winter it will be a lot higher. Bird flu tends to affect the young and healthy, 25-40yo. So, that explain where a lot of that extra 35,000 comes from.
