The 'Water Cure'
*In line HP rules on posting anything to do with a 'cure' please consult with your GP, Consultant or Medical Specialist before trying the 'water cure'*
I've been reading an eye-opening book the last few days on the train called 'You're not sick, you're thirsty' by Dr Batmanghelidj. The basic premise of his work is that a number of illnesses (e.g. asthma, angina, migraine, diabetes and more) are the body's desperate cry for water. Such illnesses are signs of severe dehydration within the body and they are apparent at an earlier stage than the Western medical indicator of a 'dry mouth'.
I'm only half way through the work but he supports his work with convincing (to a lay person) scientific analysis. He originally conducted his research in an Iranian prison (as a political prisoner following the 1979 revolution) where medicinal drugs was all but unavailable and his only way of helping those in pain was to give water.
There are some incredible testimonials in his books and on his two websites: www.watercure.com and www.watercure2.com with individuals eventually coming off their prescription drugs as they they no longer needed them (such a step only to be taken with GP's agreement, of course). The first website also provides scientific explanations for the views he holds.
His 'cure' relies on a few things more than drinking sufficient quantities of water, namely adequate intake of salt (to help regulate water levels in the body), minerals, and vitamins. In addition, there is no substutute for simple water - milk, juice etc will not rehydrate the body. He also recommends a healthy lifestyle (e.g. exercise and good nutrition) for optimum health, although these are not the principal constituents of his cure. There is a bit more detail to it than this, but if interested you can surf on his site for more info.
Has anybody tried his 'cure'? How did it go?

Well, I haven't tried the 'cure' following the information presented in his book, but I do believe that drinking plenty of fresh water (minus all the chemicals, so not tap water) is great for health. I started drinking more water about 4 years ago, and I found that I was able to concentrate much better at school, and it did spark an interest in becoming healthier in other ways too- reducing salt and sugar intake etc.
It can only be a good thing!

I think the 'drink more water generally' advice is out there and working well - you're all switched on to it!
As for the 'cure' . . . a colleague at work has a small child who has suffered from a severe dairy allergy since birth. He had a look at the same website I posted up top and thought it made sense to get her to drink more water. Apparently she's really enjoying it! They're going to leave it a while before re-testing her allergy.
I also passed the info onto a severely asthmatic colleague at work, and he's giving it a go. Will let you know of the results if I hear anything.
