Phlegm
Is it true that if you swallow phlegm it is harmful for the kidneys?
Answers:
Hi Marijke
Phlegm is a pathogen
Dictionary definition of pathogen: An agent that causes disease, especially a living microorganism such as a bacterium or fungus.
Basically the body is ejecting phlegm from the body because it carries harmful bacterium that the body no longer requires. To swallow it is simply passing that bacterium back through the digestive system which was not why it has been brought up into the mouth. Phlegm ends up in the mouth to be spat out. The Chinese are very aware of this and the importance of getting phlegm out of the body.

I guess that all those sportsmen & women, whom we see spitting all over the place must have really trouble free kidneys!
Joking aside, I find that the amount of spitting, carried out by children of all people, in public is quite revolting.
Years ago one often witnessed the old men, probably with TB, constantly "Hawking" and expelling the aptly named "Gold watches".
I must admit that I do swallow phlegm / spittle, except on the rare occasion that I have a chesty cold. The offending bronchial / nasal residue is then hankied away.
Please accept my apologies, if you are eating whilst reading this.

[color=#009933][size=2]Hello again Tx,
How can you, a mere student, afford to eat pizza? When I was a student, I used to walk ten miles to climb a 50' tall oak tree and remove the rooks eggs from the nest for my weekly meal.
Some folk have it easy these days. I wouldn't be surprised if you went on to say that you had your own shoes and a bed to sleep in! What has this world come to?
Bah humbug !

Well Richard-I call it pizza, but really it is more like a piece of bread with ONE VERY thin slice of cheese on it and a tomato on the top.[&o][&o][&o]
Oh well it'll be worth it in the end!

This is a really gruesome subject! Phlegm is usually spit or mucus. To swallow may be unpleasant or you may think you are reintroducing infection but any germs would be killed in the hydrochloric stomach acid. If it goes back into your lungs, for example, while you are asleep then that is a different matter. I think spitting to be a disgusting habit - and I don't like seeing it or stepping in it. I'm with Richard..... a handkerchief is the answer.
BTW does anyone find extremely annoying (as I do) that constant sniffing and the gurgling noises of people who either do not have hankies or do not wish to use them - you may have to sit next to them on a long journey. Every 3 or 4 mins the phlegm that has been dripping at the back of their nose is loudly sniffed back. This is usually and unsurprisingly accompanied by a persistent cough.

Yes Chris, I wondered if anyone would unveil the "snorters". I was tempted but felt that my earlier writing was already pretty unpleasant to read.
Additionally, I note that many more people [mainly <40 yrs & predominantly males] have a tendancy to keep their mouth open most of the time.
I have observed many people whilst they have been eating and it would appear that nasal breathing is a problem. Of course there are those who just do not seem to appreciate the benefit to others of keeping their full mouths closed whilst chewing.
These open-mouthed folk are known in my circle as "concrete mixers"

Are we all agreed then that handkerchief carrying should be made compulsory & anyone found guilty of having a snotty nose & not carrying one should be strung upside down & slapped on the back til fully drained and banned from eating dairy products for the rest of their natural life - especially pizza!
It's the reabsorbtion inorganic toxins that's puts extra strain on the system.
Better out than in! [:'(]

Children actually cant get rid of them phelgm until they are nearly 5!!!!! so they have to swallow and it comes out of there bum (I recently had gunky bottom from his recent pneumonia) or he would throw up and it would all be in there, personally I have trouble getting it up and out as it only tends to come up so far but not far enough for me to get it up so swallowing is my answer, your body will process it the same way it processes everything in your stomach.

Hi ALL ;)
I recently read an article confirming what ORB has written above :) but I'm snot [:'(] here to argue with anyone who believes otherwise :D :D
As for HANDKERCHIEFS  I think these should only ever be used in a chivalrous manner, like wiping the seat for another or to clear one's vision through misted glass or whatever, but NEVER for bodily 'waste' (apart from perspiration) The thought of them housing loads of germs [:'(] I much prefer the use of tissues for this [8D] one use & thrown away or better still, flushed away :D
The bottom line ... don't swallow :D
