blood results.. how do grade what is a normal results

it puzzles me how do doctors & such decree what is a "normal result.."...... are we not indiviguals?? just because the result may fall somewhere in the "normal bracket" doesn't necessary mean everything is great, fine, okay.. who decided what was the normal bracket???? when we are feeling ill or poorly or know that there is a problem..
anyone got a opinion..

Answers:

Especially thyroid tests. The range is very wide from high to low, and many people have symptoms although within the 'normal' range.
Some more enlightened endocrinologists treat according to symptoms rather than numbers apparently. Thyroiduk have a website on this.
Will pm you on your other post re hysterectomy.

Hi, there are expected ranges for males and females and different titres.

Hi - there are expected lab ranges that we supposedly function best to
your guess is as good as mine as to how they decide the 'normal, average '
best one for you.
After having a major endocrine crash a no. of years ago I was
startled that the Dr's could , from a sample of blood & a lab chart
then decide what mg I should take of whatever medication it would be -
to thus make me feel normal !!
But - I asked naievely
- but how do you know what my level is, you didnt know my level before the endocrine crash
how do you know what is right for me, is my normal !! ?
Luckilly I had a Dr who listened & allowed me to adjust the medication
to suit how i was feeling as opposed to suiting the lab results
This way worked, then my Dr retired - you get a Locum Dr -
who obviously doesnt like a person taking responsibility for their own health
& when I asked him my usual questions ie. what are my TSH, T3 ,T4 levels ( as I always did for reference )
he rolled his eyes , shoved his chair back & asks me - so sarcastically & challengingly " huh & do you want just to decide / treat yourself too "
He didnt like it one bit that i wanted to kno wabout my own health
My opinion is that our health is our own responsibility
& we should be able to do all we can to improve it
the Dr's are almost like traffic controllers whi direct us sometimes in the right direction,
sometiems they get it wrong - eitjhetr way they are there to support & help us
we guide them to what is best & right for us they should listen & support
making detached professional decisions to gat the best resulkt for us ,
not just the easiest route. ie tablets for everything...then more tablets . .

I was really overactive.. had been for ages.. just thought I was normal weight.. hten got zapped with the green "glow in the dark" stuff... nobody told me about the effects on the hormones or body bits... at present .. if I take my tablets.. [&:]my blood pressures goes mad.. and my skin is terrible.. but if I don't then the muscle cramps start.. can't win.. never been referred back to hospital.. just left to organise my blood tests myself and keep getting the scripts filled... lucky I have a good medical team I work with.. but even they are reluctant to give a opinion... what are yr views with the soya stuff and thyroid.. I drink loads of it and feel ok... but I am having a hysterectomy in dec.. and can't take HRT..... which ever way.. ...wot a crock!!![:@]

hi
soya based foods in people who are hypothyriod block the absorpation of the hormones the thyroid creates. I was a vego and when i stopped eating as much soy my Tyroid levels did rise from 10 to 14, but that's just me, everyone is differant.
Here's a link: http://www.thyroid-info.com/articles/soydangers.htm
Mind you though my thyroid levels have dropped again to 9 and my adreanls are shot so who knows.
But i have still decided to cut back on soy as i am trying to stay of meds for as long as possible.
