fatburners? are they safe?

Hi all, I've just started going to the gym again after a long break. Easy to exercise your arms and legs but the bit that really needs some work is the big gut. An advert in a magazine caught my eye...
Six pack is not about how many sit ups you do, but about bodyfat.
low bodyfat=six pack. Bodyfat over10%= no six pack.
stop wasting your time with endless sit ups!!!
check out the website for more details. www.lamuscle.com
What i want to know is, are these products any good and are they safe?

Answers:

Hmmm, my honest answer is I don't know cos I've never used them but there is something about the website that makes me suspicious (but don't ask me to put my finger on it!). I notice that they state they contain herbs but it also doesn't say what else is included in the ingredients. I would want to know they were completely natural before I started taking them. I would either try to find a completely natural product or step up your cardio work in gym to burn more fat if I were you.
Good luck!

Hiya
Sadly there are no easy answers.....
fatburners work by increasing your metabolism once you stop taking them your metabollism returns to your usual and unless you are increasing it someother way the weight will return and usually some more on top.
they are a quick fix not a solution. also some contain epenefrin (i think) which can cause shakes, headaches, nervousness. etc
If you are already down the gym, be patient at least you know that YOU will have acheived this on your own and not via the help of a short term expensive pill...

I suspect most of the pills you can buy contain concentrated caffeine... As i've mentioned before, drink a coffee before exercising. the caffeine makes your body burn fat before carbs. thats the stuff that sits on your six pack. so you need to burn fat and then...
You also need to do s-l-o-w crunches to get a build up of muscle. (forget the sit ups, they are useful for core strength but dont build your six pack.) Ideally you need to do power crunches like here: http://www.shouyuliang.com/newsletter/v1n6/v1n6a4.shtml (see the bottom of the page).
I'll let you know how i get on... i _almost_ have a 6 pack. (Flat tum, and slight definition)
edit: also, there's someone who recently joined HP who's big on fitness (forget her name, sorry). could ask her...

drinking coffee before exercising is a real good way to be mean to your body! (sorry Darren), why would you want to dehydrate yourself anymore and put your system under more pressure, also it raises your blood pressure as does exercise whilst you are doing it, so if you are already starting high that could with some people spell trouble.....

dehydration: depends on what your caffeine intake is. if you drink something akin to mud then yes, but a normal cup of nescafe etc should be fine, esp as you'd probably drink water during the session anyway.
blood pressure: well of course there'll be people who can't handle caffeine, but for the average person drinking a coffee before hand shouldn't be a problem i'd have thought! besides if you have high blood pressure should you be exercising at the sort of levels we're discussing?

Answers:

Hi
Wasnt aware we were discussing any major levels, just that of fat burning pills!
Most people run around dehydrated anyway so why add to a problem if you know you are going to put your body under strain.
Exercise is one of the best things for blood pressure control, if you started say borderline levels with the diastolic, then exercised this would raise it higher if you had had coffee before then this is taking unecessary risks with your BP....
regardless of blood pressure did you know that you are most likely to have a heart attack within the first four hours of drinking a coffee as it temporarily hardens the arteries, the very same arteries you are expecting to work harder during a workout.

Hi Darren
I just wanted to say that i tried those power crunches and JESUS CHRIST!!!
what are you superman?
i could not do them and was in agony trying!! mind you i am not as fit as i would like to be.
while we are on the subject would you happen to know why i am aching so much?
I do half hour of areobics (video) but i also do a warm up before and a cool down after but every time i do it my hips and my calves are in agony for days after. Am i just not warming up enough or do you think it could be something wrong with my joints?
By the way i am ashamed to say that i couldn't be bothered to try and rememeber the names of the muscles mentioned above..........so much for A&P LOL

thanks for your replies. Caffeine is definitely a no-no for me. Makes my heart go like the clappers. My blood pressure is too high and I'm not sure how I'm going to get it down while I continue my rock-star lifestyle.
Just ordered a book from Edgar Cayce's web-site about lowering BP. I'll let you know how i get on. (who's Edgar Cayce? shame on you!!!)
with regard to what's in these pills, here's what it says on the website:
L-carnetine
choline
inositol
betaine
methionine
chromium piccolinate
i've never heard of any of these. sounds like a-level chemistry. anybody with any knowledge please explain. At the end of the day, i think I'd rather have a glass of carrot juice, which contains..... um...... carrot juice.
and beta carotine and vitamin A, but I'm with Jason Vale when he says, Do you actually need to to know that? Do you know what these things are?

Answers:

Hi
They are very useful elements we need in our day to day life, choline and inositol help the abosorption of vit b which increases our metabolism...so you could just go and buy a b vitamin.

Hi there chupichulo,
I'm suffering from Lipoedema so I know how hard it is to reduce the areas that don't want to budge.
At present I take Reductil that was prescribed by my Doctor as I can't do a lot of excessive exercise...which is frustrating for someone who spent nearly 5 years training in the art of Tae Kwon-Do.
Although I haven't taken the tablets you were talking about, I have taken L-Carnetine on it's own. I found that the tablets were beneficial. Although I didn't lose loads of weight, I did notice that I had a slightly elevated energy level...probably because the tablets were helping my metabolism to work properly and get the best nutrients from the food I ate. I never had side effects from them.
I did once, many years ago, try a 'herbal fat burner tablet' from one of those adverts. As TigerBee said, I suffered with the shakes and was always jittery. A friend of mine had the dizzy spells and headaches.
At the end of the day, making the effort to go to the Gym is a HUGE positive for your health. I also did a lot of those style of crunchs that DarrenFollowsThePath mentioned when I used to do Tae Kwon-Do and 'yes', they do work.
However, if you suffer from BP, have you tried Swimming and Aqua Aerobics? It's worked wonders for me!!
Take care and all the best!!

Glad you had a laugh, like your kitty too. Have you tried to do those crunches?
TigerBee
I know how to breathe during exercise, the breathing part isn't the problem, i cant even get into the starting position without it hurting let alone do 3 sets of 10!!

Answers:

LOL! NO!
I can’t even do sit-ups with the help of an ab-crunch! Have to master that first before I would even attempt something as ambitious as the above exercise!
