AP Literature Yay? or Nay? (serious)

AP Literature Yay? or Nay? (serious)
I just switched into AP Lit for my senior year. I am pretty unmotivated though. I probably won't get an A on one paper the entire year and its going to be my hardest english class ever.
I still have the oppurtunity to switch out and rearrange my scheldule.
Also i have summer work for the next 8 days...... (WORST PART) 2 books, one is Oedipus the King, and another is Slaughter House 5, i have to read them both and write an essay on each.....
what would you do?

Answer:

what would you do? I would take the regular class. I'm gunna be a senior too and I am only taking one honors class. The AP class will look good though, so it's up to you. where do wanna go to school?

Answer:

nay to the max

Answer:

well I would like to go a higher ranked college, obviously it would look good on my transcript, but it would be probably a B- on the report card.
I can also try and switch into an AP gov class so I atleast have another challenge this year.

Answer:

See if you can take a Dual Credit class. I am taking one next semester. I will get one college credit (I don't know how many hours) and one AP credit. Most people think English 101 is easier than honors or AP so this should be a good deal

Im so undecided.

Answer:

Take the AP... i tested out of the first 2 semesters of college english (writing classes) because of AP english 3 and 4. Forget your grade, i got B's. It's all about not having to take the class in college. So worth it.

Answer:

From what people in my HS say, I have to pass a nay for this.
1) It's senior year, people stop trying or even caring after all the college applications are sent. The rest of the year is just messing around.
2) It's a difficult class and requires a shitload of reading/writing and at the end of the year, it's $82 spent to do 3 hours of more reading and writing.
Take another AP, any history would do. 2 weeks of studying and you're guaranteed a 4. :)

2 perfect answers completely contradicting eachother.....this is sooo hard, more responses please Overall I would say, No do not take it.

Answer:

Overall I would say, No do not take it. as much as a value your opinion i want someone who is in the 19-20+ range who can actually guage how much it affected their lives...

Answer:

i just got out of high school , and i wish i would of took more ap classes , so i don't have to take them in college , i say go for it
edit: i have a lot of friends that took the class and passed the test , they said it wasn't that hard , and they aren't like geniuses either

Answer:

I took AP Lit my senior year, it wasn't bad at all. I used to have to read and all kinds of stuff each week (I hate reading boring stuff), but I got through it pretty easily to be honest.

Answer:

i took 4 AP classes my senior year , AP english literature was one of them. i passed with a 3 and that has helped me in college so far because i dont need to take 2 english classes that i would have needed for my GE's. it was a lot of work tho, we would write tons of essays and read alot of poetry/literature. it was so much that i never read anything really, only on www.sparknotes.com . if i were you, i'd take it, because it would bring you benefits even if you get a B- and get a 2 on the test.

Answer:

I got a 3 on the AP Lit test. I hated the class because we would have discussions and sh!t, and I couldn't discuss things for sh!t!! I got a B first semester and then a C the second one. I wish I just took Honors English. I was already taking AP Spanish, AP Calc. AB and AP Computer Programming II, so I don't think it would've made a difference to the college I was accepted to if I took Honors English or AP (Going to Maryland).
But def take a couple AP classes. I just don't recommend AP English unless you don't mind all the reading you're going to do and have a few buddies to talk with which was another downside for me because all my buds took Honors English and I was stuck with all these smart motherfu*kers I never talked to. lol Actually, really don't take it unless you got some buddies and you're a good reader.

Answer:

Im a pretty strong writer, but i hate reading all of these 19th century literary novels.....

Answer:

bump, anyone else ?

Answer:

What about taking an honors course? This is what I took senior year.
AP Lit is tough and a lot of writing/analysis. If this is your thing, then great, take the class. But if you're like me and would rather slouch off a little more during your senior year, while not looking lazy while applying to colleges, then take honors. It won't make much of a difference when applying to schools. Off the top of my head, kids from my honors class ended up at Harvard, UPenn, Cornell, and Northwestern.

Answer:

what other classes are you taking? if the other classes are manageable then it may not hurt to go ahead and take the AP course.

Answer:

what other classes are you taking? if the other classes are manageable then it may not hurt to go ahead and take the AP course. my classes are as follows:
2nd hour: personal finnace, business communication 2nd semester
3rd: Anatomy
4th: Calculus
6: Drawing 1, then sociology 2nd semester
7 Ap literature
I could probably put AP gov somewhere

Answer:

that's a pretty good workload. not sure if you would want to add AP Lit...especially if you have a lot of after school activities.... one item that you have to consider is the amount of homework that you will have... you should have a bit of Calc homework....
ultimately, the decision is yours to make. your transcript will look better with an extra AP class. Ideally you would have a decent grade though. If you are dedicated and have the time (after school each day) then take the course... if you feel that your course load is going to stretch you thin (from a time perspective) then don't.

Answer:

Honestly it was the toughest English class that I ever took. My English teacher was a Nazi about poem analysis and comprehension, but I ended up getting a 4 on the AP test so I guess it was worth it.
If you have the free time and want to get better prepped for college, do it. If you really want to enjoy your senior year to the max then you're def looking for a different class. It does depend on the teacher tho.
Edit: For the record, I have 21 AP credits and 2 accepted AP tests under my belt. It's going to make college a hell of a lot easier on me.

Answer:

Slaughterhouse 5 for AP English?
Are standards dropping these days or what?
Watch the movie.

Answer:

If this helps your decision...
I was the one that said it was worth it because I never had to write a paper every week because of the first 2 semesters of college English. My roommates and friends alwayyys had English homework writing bitch papers. The work i put in senior year was so worth testing out of the work i would have had to do in college English.
Unless you are just terrible in English and it's going to ruin your social life (don't see how this could happen, I went to a real respected school in my state, AP wasn't easy) then take the AP, suck it up it ain't that bad.
Aight I'm done the rest is to you. Good luck man

Answer:

if you are sure you can pull off at least a 4 on the AP exam, many colleges will accept that for credit for freshman year english (3 is borderline). depending on the major that you're looking into, you most likely will not have to take english
benefits:
- NO portfolios on top of finals during freshman english. i saw all my friends freshman year worrying and bitching about how they have to work on x number of papers for their english portfolios
- AP exam is much cheaper than a 3 credit hour class. instead of taking a class you don't enjoy, you can decide to get your GenEd requirements completed.
- you don't have to pay for books for this class
- significantly cuts down on number of writing assignments over the year in college.
but if you're gonna fck around senior year and just get a 2 on the AP exam, don't bother with it. The AP exam matters much more than your grade for the class.
personally, i got a 4 on AP english lit, and I did not take 1 freshman english course in college (engineering major).. and engineers HATE english.

Answer:

I haven't read any of the replies yet in this thread, but here's what I did:
Screw AP, it's too hard, too much reading, too many papers
Take a dual-credit english course at your high school with a community college if it's offered by your district. I lived around Houston, and a Houston Community College prof would come to my high school and we had class 3 times a week just like a college course.
I got high school credit, the class was a joke that I blew off and got an A, got guaranteed credit from my college of choice (Texas A&M) because of a state law, and didn't have to take a pain-in-the-ass AP test to get that credit.

Answer:

I took it. Of course it was alot of work and not a bundle of fun, but it helped alot. I'm in college now and my essays are easier to write after taking that class. It was really helpful learning how to analyze text too. I put alot of the things I learned in AP Lit to work in college. Stick it out.

Answer:

don't listen to these lazy ****s, take all the AP courses you can take, and take college credits from them if you can (my highschool had it). Step your game up and you can laugh all throughout college when you're getting a free education.
