Stretching(serious)
Stretching(serious)
So, I want to be able to stretch like doing full splits and etc for all my sports so I want to start tomorrow...my questions...
1) How long a session?
2) Can I do it 7 days a week?(I only do it @ practice and workouts)
3) How long will it take to be able to do splits and be really strecthed out(I'm normal right now...I can almost touch my toes)
4) Any website of lists of different stretches?

i like doing dynamic stretches, they make me feel more ready overall. and you should always use dynamic stretching before explosive activity, unless you're stretching ur hip flexors.

What are dynamic stretches? I just do the stretches that it says to do in Arnolds Encylapedia of Modern body-building so idk about stretching other then that.

I just do the stretches that it says to do in Arnolds Encylapedia of Modern body-building so idk about stretching other then that. they're where you do movements such as rotating your shoulders. they help stretch out the muscles for explosive activity. its like the opposite of holding ur stretch for like 20 secs.
some sites take a while to load on my computer, but here is a search

always stretch b4 and after workout for like 10 min atleast. strech groin and hams like crazy. BUt never stretch the muscle cold like out of bed or something it will do more damage than good.

4) Any website of lists of different stretches? I stretch for about 30 minutes a day (dancer for many years). But that's full body stretching, not just flexibility in one area. Stretching every day is recomended if you want to increase flexibility.
How long it will take is very individual and obviously depends on your current level of flexibility and physical/ genetic components. Some people will never be extremely flexible ( I have never been able to do a box split for example, even after years of stretching) others just are naturally.
As others have said it's important that your muscles are warmed up because warmer muscles are more pliable. Hold a stretch for between 10 and 30 seconds. No significant increase in results is found in holding the stretch longer. Don't bounce your stretches.
I'm guessing by full split you are talking of box splits. The best way to get them is just to attempt them and hold the position for 30 seconds, like this guy:
Another way is to place your feet against a wall, legs spread, and push your legs further open by moving your butt forward toward the wall as you stretch, breathing and relaxing into the increasing stretch.
A third way involves a second person. you spread your legs and they do the same opposite you and then they grab hold of your arms and they push your legs back with their legs/feet as they pull you forward (which also increases lower back flexibility). You just have to make sure you don't do it with a jokster cause if they pull hard and it will hurt like a biatch!
Hope that was of some aid!
