hello outdoor recreation section
yes well im 17 and i have never been interested in fishing before until now ..ive been going to the beach a lot lately and found theres a very popular area for fishing and there are many people there who catch countless amounts of fish.. it got me intrested and im going to buy a fishing poll sometime this week ..i have one question tho ..i live in staten island and they have this strict rule on how big of a fish u can catch ..u need to catch a fish atleast of a specific weight to be able to keep it and if it's too small u have to throw it back into the water ...is this a rule for every area u guys are in or is this some b.s rule that only i have to deal with ???im looking forward to chatting in this section about fishing and just wanted to introduce myself ..thanks

Hello there!
perhaps some of the guys might be able to help you specificly with your area.
as far as fish sizes ago...here in Aus the local tackle shops have these fold out plastic stickers with all the fish sizes on it..so we know what size fish can be kept.
might be worth going to your local tackle shop and seeing if they have anything like that.
there is also nothing like your local tackle shop for giving info on local spots!

Hey
Here in Cali we have slot limits on sturgeon, and a few yrs back they tried something like that with salmon but didnt stick with it. Theres pretty much rules for everything some species have more regs than others just the way it is and i agree alot of them are BS and some do more harm than good.
What are you fishin for over on the left coast? What type of rod you lookin to buy?

Answer:

Yes, there are size and daily creel (the # you can keep) everywhere. Go to a local "Mom & Pop" place when you buy your equipment and tell them you are just starting and ask them for advice.

well for Staten Island shore fishing/bottom fishing this time of year you are looking at
bluefish - no size limit
striped bass
weakfish
fluke aka summer flounder
flounder
dogfish shark
blackfish aka tautog
black sea bass
sea robin
porgy aka scup
maybe a few others I cant recall......
Some of these fish have size limits (stripers, fluke, seabass) but they are based always based on length, never on weight. Others dont have size limits but may have bag limits on how many you can keep. A regulations booklet, free or dirt cheap at any tackle store, is the very first thing you should get.
You may also need a license, not sure. You didnt when I lived back there, not for salt water fishing.
But since you're starting at the very beginning a good book on local fishing techniques and species would be a good investment....there are a lot of them for that specific area. Anything by Milt Rosko is more than worth the money. He has books specifically on fish in your area and how to catch them, like striped bass. He's from NJ and is a legendary fishing author.
You'll have to work your way thru the learning curve but that's really all part of the sport too, and what makes it so rewarding. And the more you do it, the better you get at it. It's a GREAT hobby and a lot of fun and I encourage you to go for it, post up any questions you have as you're learning and sorting everything out and we can definitely help you out.
