Every thread in this section seems to be about either Guitars, Heavy Metal or Hip Hop. Do you lot actually listen to anything else other than rap and rock? And I have to say that the majority of your taste in Hip Hop is shit. Lil Wayne is not the best rapper he is shit.
Lil Wayne, 50 Cent...ect what the hell do they rap about? Because you know there is better Hip Hop out there with a message like Public Enemy and RUN - D.M.C.
Heavy Metel is alright but most of it has too much going on so you can't enjoy it or hear the vocalist without him screaming down the mic.
But what angers me is your lack of knowledge for Dance/Electronica music such as Dubstep, Grime, Jungle, Drum and Bass, Breakbeat, Hardcore...ect All you Americans seem to listen to is Techno and Psy/Trance.
Seriously for such an advanced country your taste in electronical music sucks ass. Nobody even listens to Techno or Trance anymore in the UK, it died like 10 years ago.
I will probley get allot of negs from this but I just had to get it of my chest.

Answer:

I can only speak for hiphop on here. Take a look in 'hiphop album of the day thread' you'll find its quite diverse. Not everyone just likes lil wayne and 50 cent. Infact, this forum is awesome for hiphop, you just have to ignore the threads like "whos better 50 cent or lil wayne" and "omg new akon track is hot!"

Answer:

What's Trance?? I listen to metal/rock because I play guitar and like the technical skill it takes to pull those songs off. Rap as far as I'm concerned is a bunch of shit music with even shittier on top of it, so really you can't even call that music. Lastly I hate mainstream music nowadays because it's all emo/grunge filled crap that just screams poor playing and song structure. The ONLY time I listen to the radio is when a station is playing classic rock or songs from the early to mid 90s.

Answer:

One or the other?
You don't need to hate one type of music to espouse the virtues of another. If you don't see what you like in this section, then tell us about what music appeals to you.
I agree with your initial point about the polarization that exists in music these days. But that's no reason to be disparaging--you'd become part of the problem. In addition, I learned a long time ago when I was in the service, that you can learn to enjoy a variety of music if you just give it a chance.
Here's about the most annoying thing I find in music these day: People who think because they like one type of music, they naturally have to hate the other?

Answer:

^ If you talking to Angelfire2005 I agree. I on the other hand like all music from Acid Jazz to Industrial Grime. This is what annoys me the most, the fact that the majority of the board listen and talk about generic music when they could be listening to music that is far supirior in sound without a doubt.

If you're talking to me then I agree that just because you like one type of music doesn't mean you necessarily have to hate to other, however that doesn't apply to me. I don't like the other genres of music because it's opposite of what I like, it's because I just don't like them.

Answer:

I listen to metal.. I play metal.. I enjoy metal..
whats wrong with that?
If you don't like it, fine! You dont have to
Make a thread about what you like, not about bitching about what other people like and how the music they enjoy is 'bullshit'

Answer:

whats wrong with that? There's nothing "wrong" with it. But there is a problem when that's the ONLY music you listen to. There are literally dozens of varieties of music in this country alone. If all you listen too is metal there's something very wrong. If you ever take any post secondary music appreciation course, you'd know what I mean. If you only know/like one kind of music, you'll find yourself sadly, far behind. If you're talking to me then I agree that just because you like one type of music doesn't mean you necessarily have to hate to other, however that doesn't apply to me. But I'm not sure what you mean by "just don't like them"? You say that as if you've have some kind of genetic predisposition to only like one kind of music? For whatever reason, you learned to like the type of music you like. And if that can happen once, it can happen again...you just have to give it a chance.

Make a thread about what you like, not about bitching about what other people like and how the music they enjoy is 'bullshit' I never said any genre was shit, in fact im sure you would think certain types of music are crap, where as me I enjoy every and I mean every genre. Im just saying that people on this board only seem to listen to one genre of music and dismiss all others, when there is music out there far better than majority of songs listed on here. One of my favorite bands is actually Grade 8 who play metal... shows how much you know!
edit: Krane beat me to it ^ :D

Can u post links to some of that music?

For whatever reason, you learned to like the type of music you like. And if that can happen once, it can happen again...you just have to give it a chance. When I said rock/heavy metal I was being a little too specific. What I should have said was that I listen to music that is mainly composed of and around the guitar. My ipod has everything from death metal to classical guitar, which covers a broad spectrum of musical styles and tastes, but they all link back to the guitar.
Rap is just something I could never get into. Guys rapping about hoes and drugs was just something I could not relate to because I don't relate to them in real life, hence why should I listen to their music. Also (don't wanna get flamed for this) but how hard could it be to buy a beat (which a lot of rappers do) and then just lay lyrics over it. Now compare this to a 4 person band composing melodies all in the same key with solos and finally lyrics added at the end. The level of skill required to do the latter is much higher than the former.

Oh for chrissake, this is what I'm so afraid of. These presuppositions about different types of musical. I'm not even in the current rap generation, but I can't say I hate ALL rap. Sure, some of it falls under your definition, but I could never say I hate all of any one kind of music.
To be truthful, when I was about your age I too felt the same way, albeit about Country Western music. I believed there was nothing from that genre that could ever appeal to me. Fortunatley, I had a roommate in the service that listened to Patsy Cline. At first, I'd run out of the room everytime he played it, but after he accused me of being you know what, then I took the time to really sit down and listen. By the end of that year we'd both be singing the words to "Crazy". Since that time, I've maintained my objectivity, and have experienced other things: movies, cars, sports, politics etc. I can't tell you how it has helped me "fit in" and relate to others, when otherwise, I would have been sitting alone in a corner.
I'm not implying that that's going to happen all the time, but my point is at least give it a try. It's ashamed there has to be so much polarization in everthing these day. All I'm asking is that you at least sit down, and give it a try. And when and if you do, be objective...I mean really objective. That means you've got to do it more than once. These things take time, but that's provided you want to learn something new?
p.s that goes both way!

Answer:

I listen to everything from hip hop to classical, prog/classic rock, instrumental rock, all 30 million sub-sub-sub-sub-subgenres of metal, ambient, dark ambient and ambient/folk (though this is only one album - karl sanders "saurian meditation"). Even some gothic rock like modern tiamat is great.
I can't listen to jazz or blues for some reason, dance music is ok if I am at a club or something, otherwise it is shallow and pointless. Pop is deplorable and I have even't really tried anything else

Answer:

Most people tend to prefer a style of music that they can relate to and appeals to there persona which there is nothing wrong with, i do the same thing but that doesnt mean i dont appreciate other types of music, if you block out other types of music you shouldnt. You should give all music a go with an open mind and give it a chance to grow on you. The music i used to hate the most now i love the most. Im sure other metal fans can relate.

the OP's post is pretty useless in my opinion. preference for music is strictly opinion-based, nothing more. "Better" music is subjective.
On a more specific note, I couldn't care less if the Techno/Trance scene "died" in the UK. My preference for music has nothing to do with how popular it is. OP, you've got some strong dumb in you dude.

And yet that "subjectivity" (when rated by the pros) can hold a Grammy Award! Say what you will about your subjective choice, quality in music will always reign supreme.

I listen to a lot of jazz.

I took jazz for 2 years and I was in a big band (playing upright bass) for two year also. I hated every minute of it.. but I am glad I took it because those two styles of music are NOT easy. So it was a challenge for me to learn and play the songs.
I do appreciate other styles of music. I just prefer the metal / rock genre :)

Wow, I think you missed the point entirely. Congrats.
