All Black people, please give me some insight and your thoughts(No Racist)(serious)
First off I want to say I have many black friends. I work in an inner city YMCA and grew up going to city schools and playing basketball in the city. I've had many black friends and white friends both good side of the tracks and bad. This is a long post, but I"d really love the input of black people who can give me insight into your beliefs, culture, what you experienced and how you are taught to view or think about life.
I have to ask those of you who are black, what do you think about the black culture atm?
I've always felt as if those black friends I have most of the time would never let me get close to them outside of basketball or school, or invite me over to their homes. Is this true?
I have one black friend who truthfully as strange as it seems says he hates what the black culture has become, how its known as lazy, filled with rap, free handout man keeping me down type of culture. What do you guys think about this stereotype. He actually makes fun of other black people as strange as that sounds. I have another friend who is also a smart young black man studying engineering, and he tells me he feels that there aren't enough strong black leaders who wont use their people to further their personal agenda's.
What are you guys taught when you are young, what type of values do you learn in your homes? Are you taught to think of us white people differently?
One thing i have noticed at my work is that 80% of the time when I say hi to some of the older black men they look away or won't even acknowledge me. I feel sometime they may hate my guts when I'm just saying hi to be nice.
Why is it that some of the people I work with or go to school with who are recent immigrants from Africa(kenya etc) are completely different in speech, dress, and thought when they get here than black people in the USA, yet black people here always say they are like their brethren from Africa by calling themselves African Americans?
Fill me in to your culture and the eyes of the black man.
yeah its fun. pew pew

I've had many black friends and white friends both good side of the tracks and bad. This is a long post, but I"d really love the input of black people who can give me insight into your beliefs, culture, what you experienced and how you are taught to view or think about life. Well im black but I grew up in the country in a place that is like 95% white. I have one really close friend thats black and all of my other friends are white. Ive dated white and black girls etc. My family brought me up not to place so much importance on race but importance on character. <------ sad that that an overwhelming ammount of whites (and others) dont have the common sense to judge the same way. In fact most of the women in my family have at one point or another dated a guy that wasnt black and my uncle is married to a white women my last Gf was white. So unlike alot of Americans my family isnt race conscious nuts. Most of my family grew up around mostly whites so you may not think of most of my family members as steretypical "black inner city culture". My grandma plays the guitar and likes country music for example. I like all kinds of music, Rock, Rap, country etc..
I have to ask those of you who are black, what do you think about the black culture atm? I dont really believe in a thing called "black culture" but if your refering to inner city thug type culture than its sad in my eyes. Some black people believe that if your not sagging your pants or talk a certain way than you are "acting white". If you dont limit yourself to a certain lifestyle or type of music than you are "acting white". Thats just the effects of comming from broken homes with no education and no concept of how successful people operate in the real world though. These type of black people should be payed no mind IMO. This goes for certain groups of whites and other races IMO too.
I've always felt as if those black friends I have most of the time would never let me get close to them outside of basketball or school, or invite me over to their homes. Is this true? I dont know almost all of my friends are white, have been in and out of my home stayed the night when I was younger etc.. Ever think that maybe it didnt have something to do with skin color? Maybe they just didnt see you as that good of a friend?
I have one black friend who truthfully as strange as it seems says he hates what the black culture has become, how its known as lazy, filled with rap, free handout man keeping me down type of culture. Again I look down on that culture too but I wouldnt call that "black culture". I would call that urban ghetto culture. There are alot of blacks that dont fit that stereotype but unrightfully get bunched in there just becuase they are black. The media focuses on ghetto rappers and atheletes so narrow minded people are led to believe that almost all blacks are like that. What do you guys think about this stereotype. He actually makes fun of other black people as strange as that sounds. Yeah I do to, but I tend to make fun of idiots of any race. I have another friend who is also a smart young black man studying engineering, and he tells me he feels that there aren't enough strong black leaders who wont use their people to further their personal agenda's. I have to agree with the guy. There arent a whole lot of positive role models, but there are some. The media just tries to glorify black rappers and atheletes but undermines the few other powerful black leaders out there. I think black youth (like people my age) need to step up and start being leaders themselves. This really can go for any race though.
What are you guys taught when you are young, what type of values do you learn in your homes? Are you taught to think of us white people differently? Nope not when I grew up but I tend to think alot of white households are taught to look at blacks different whether its positive or negatively different. Black homes too. Some people cant accept the fact that we are all humans and that no race is the default race. I think when people look to race for a blanket of superiority or pride it shows a glaring insecurity.
One thing i have noticed at my work is that 80% of the time when I say hi to some of the older black men they look away or won't even acknowledge me. I feel sometime they may hate my guts when I'm just saying hi to be nice. I dont know maybe its just something else. What about the younger black people? Ive got dirty looks from older white guys for no reason at all so its not only just a "black guy thing".
Why is it that some of the people I work with or go to school with who are recent immigrants from Africa(kenya etc) are completely different in speech, dress, and thought when they get here than black people in the USA, yet black people here always say they are like their brethren from Africa by calling themselves African Americans? What? I think you are making a huge generalization with this one. The reason blacks in America are completely different from blacks in Africa is flagrantly obvious. I never refer to myself as African American. I am American. In fact I am black and I have never once in my life heard one black person say what you just claimed they say lol. Hope this helped. Just ask if you want to know anything else.
I'm a gangbanger.
Are you aware I had a person in human resources tell me after this thing played out that 'some people' were afraid of me around the studio. I asked her why, because I'm a 6-foot-1, black man with dark skin and who doesn't go around saying 'Yessah, massa sir' and 'No sir, massa' to everyone? It's nuts when your presence alone can just scare people, and that made me a prime candidate to take the heat in a dysfunctional family. (no serious)
There are kenyans at my school who dress is AF/Hollister type clothes and date rich white chicks.

Never start off with "I have many black friends"
There are kenyans at my school who dress is AF/Hollister type clothes and date rich white chicks. Yeah I wear AF/Hollister Polo type stuff most of the time and have dated a couple of rich white chicks. Id say its pretty rare because I dont know many other black people that have the same style/attitude as me.
I guess none of you saw the Serious in the title...
I don't think there is a standard "black culture". I think there is an urban or ghetto culture that black people started for the most part. But I can't think of an overall "black culture" that encompasses us all. Not all black people listen to rap and think that drugs and gangs are all they have. Like not all white people aspire to go to Ivy league schools and be the CEO of a major corporation one day.
There is an unrban culture that has be allowed to get so far ou of hand that there seems to be no way to control it. Drug, gangs, prostitution.. These aren't just black problems.. They are american problems that have a huge affect on the black population. But anywhere there are poor people these problems will exist. They exist in mostly white trailor parks. They exist in mosty hispanic and asian neighborhoods.
What needs to be addressed more than anything is the education system, justice system and the welfare system.. Fixing those will help to correct alot of the problems that society currently faces.

You could remove "black" and I think that fits our entire culture in general. All races including my own (I am white). People seem to be getting lazier and playing the victim card more and more.

So race and gender were never really harped on in my family.. We were told when we were young that we weren't any different than anyone else..
I did a year in college and joined the Army because, well I love it.. My sister graduated college with a degree in CJ and is working for the city gov't in a pretty good job with good upward movement capabilities.. Neither of us considered our race, or mix of, to hinder what we were capable of doing, and neither of us use it as an excuse when we fail.
I do make jokes and say, "it's cause I'm black isn't it" but I'm never serious about it.
One thing I get from alot of people is that the can't understand why I consider myself black, while my sister considers herself white. I think that is just a matter of the people we choose to associate with when we were growing up, and continue to today. I spend more time with other black people and she spends more time with other white people. Not that we don't have friends on the opposite side, it's just a matter of who dominates our friend cirlce.
