Help- ethernet cable (simple question)

Help- ethernet cable (simple question)
So my school says I need an ethernet cable to connect to the internet in my dorm room. I went to bestbuy and bought one, but I'm not sure if I got the right one. Bestbuy told me they were all the same.
This is what my school website said:
"Computer cables (5e and RG6) are available for purchase at the University Campus Bookstore and may also be purchased at numerous off campus stores."
I dunno what the 5e and RG6 shit means. The cable I bought from bestbuy is a CAT6 premium network cable. on the box it says RJ45 Male to Male (no homo). Will this work? computer peoples plz help me.

Answer:

If you asked them for an ethernet cable, they should have gave you one, they're pretty standard, you don't need to worry about the 5e and rg6, just look at the ends, it should look a bit wider than a phone cord connector, and have red green and blue wires running into the end.

If you asked them for an ethernet cable, they should have gave you one, they're pretty standard, you don't need to worry about the 5e and rg6, just look at the ends, it should look a bit wider than a phone cord connector, and have 4 colored wires running into it. it looks more like 8 colors, but it's all good. the size looks right
That'll do it. ok thanks.
I repped you both. (if not, i'll get it no recharge)

I repped you both. (if not, i'll get it no recharge) I thought it was four, but i just double checked the one I have to be sure, its quite a bit more, so I edited my post, they can obviously vary in colors.

Cat 6 will work fine. Are the ends already crimped or do you have to make it yourself? It looks like a oversized multicolored phone jack. don't think i gotta do anything too it, looks ready to just insert into the hole in the side of my laptop.
somethin like this:

Answer:

Cat6, from what I understand, will work fine. It's backwards compatible with older standards.
However, that cable probably cost more than you needed to pay.
*shrug*

*shrug* how much would you expect to pay? it's a 7' cable. did seem pretty expensive, i think it was 18 bucks =(
i can still return it. what's the cheapest thing i can buy that will work. can't build one, i hate computers and electronics. i refuse to try to build one =)

Answer:

Rj45 crossover cable i use that for my mini network at home

Answer:

Rj45 and 2 zig zags

Answer:

You do NOT need Cat6. Cat5e is lesser grade, but unless you're running some intense bandwidth, Cat5e will be fine. My shop charges $1 per foot, and I think we overcharge. $18 for 7' is WAY overpriced. Sounds like RadioSmack prices.

Answer:

i owuldnt buy cables from best buy. to save money just order some cat 5 cable online

Answer:

Cat5e and Cat6 are physically compatible, Cat5e is just a continuation of the Cat5 spec. They're both 8P8C so you're fine.
I run Cat6 around my house to my home servers, and I have a few hundred feet of it in my closet.
Anyway, I would have bought online if I were you. I can buy 1000 feet for 60 dollars online.

Answer:

I remember having to make one myself last year, that was tough. I spent an hour on it and still couldn't get it working.

Is there any retailer where I can get cat5? i don't mind overpaying a bit, I like shopping in stores rather than online. But I'll get it online if I have to. I still don't even understand what all the other shit means like RG6 and shit, but whatever. Any stores that will sell me cat5? or do they all just have the fancy stuff.
could I buy something like this? it's cat5 and half as expensive

Answer:

how much would you expect to pay? it's a 7' cable. I would return it and get a longer one. Usually there is only 1 jack and you might sit on the other side of the room and not want the cabled just crossing straight across the room.

How about this one, is this ok for me?
