Dumbell FLat Bench Question

Dumbell FLat Bench Question
As you can see I am 5'11" @ about 177lbs at this point in time. (I have to update)
Whats your take on repping 3 sets of 10 of 80lb dumbells. Is that decent weight? I've been working out hard for about 5-6 months now. I've been lifting for a year straight now. I started at 55lb dumb bells and moved up to the 80s. I use to always do straight bar benching, but I've been told if you want increase that switch to the dumbells. I've been doing dumb bells for about 3-4 weeks now. I can tell it's a hell of a lot harder than a straight bar. I usually rep at 185 lbs on the straight bar.
Is that a good improvement? For someone in my weight / height category is repping 80lb dumbells considered decent weight?

Answer:

yeah thats pretty good you can probbly get 100's up

Answer:

Answer:

Yeah, that's great... did you have a real question or wanted to brag to the misc.? :p

beastly, i pyriamid up and ended last chest day with 6 reps of 85 lbs. DB's. I need a spotter and a lift off on that weight, but it gets done w/o help after that. My arms like to *** out on me towards the last set usually at rep 8

Answer:

Actually this was a serious question tough guy. I see guys busting out 95 lbs and they are the same size as me. I'm thinking in my head got dam. I was just kidding OP chill. lol Congrats on your lifts!

Answer:

It's all relative to how lnog you've been lifting. I'm 5'9", 160 (and gaining, haha) and I've been lifting on and off for years. I put up 90's (about 8 reps on the third set); however, my friend just started lifting a few months ago and puts up 55's (He's 5'11", 185 or so). Bottom line, you've been making decent progress for the 6 months you've been lifting.
Note: This is not really something for the Misc., haha.

Answer:

i only did like 70'sx1 after 6 months of hard lifting. then another 6 months later I'm doin sets o f 130's I'm sure i could get up 140s (yes natural)(no ego). You should start to add weight like crazy just don't do a predictable 3 sets of 10 every week. after u build that strong base and grip then it just gets easier and easier to add weight.

Answer:

In body-building you shouldnt necassarily worry about how much weight your using but focusing on using a full range of motion with whatever weight you can do that best at. Don't lift to satisfy your ego lift to stimulate muscle growth. Weight will come.

Yeah, I wasnt really sure where to post this.

Answer:

I think you are doing pretty well, but I'd change your rep range for a while. Maybe do a 5 x 5 or 10 x 3 set/rep break down.
I've been lifting for 18 years and usually stick to the 3-5 rep range on all heavy sets of compound exercises and use 8-15 reps for warmup or non compound exercises. I can usually incline/ flat dumbell press 105's up to 120's for a few sets of 5, but I can "only" do 10 reps at about 85lbs....I need to work on endurance a little more.
The heaviest dumbell's I've used for presses are probably 135's for 1 set of 3-5, but that was a while ago.

Answer:

some people feel different but its never about the weight, its about how your chest development is going. If you are only goin for numbers no 80lbs dumbell aint shit and that is in one way tryin to be an *******. Unless you are a powerlifter or lifting for football for get about the number

I agree 100%. The guy that spots me is rather big. All natural as well. He looks like he knows what he's doing. Plus it appears he knows how to spot very well. I trust him. He told me I had good form. Form is my main focus along with heavy weights.

I'm going to switch it up next week. I think I may try 90-95 lbs 5-6 times.

My arms like to *** out on me towards the last set usually at rep 8 I dont have a spotter, so i jsut gotta be carefull. I would of tried another rep or 2 with someone there to watch, but i didnt have no one, so id rather not take the chance of getting hit with 85lbs to the face, haha.

Answer:

Wow, strong attention whore. You'll survive tough guy

Answer:

no its shit
i move more with my pubic hair (serious)

Answer:

Pretty good, about what I do.

Answer:

That's impressive, OP. I can't do over 65 lb DB presses. But then again I'm old and have an aching right shoulder and a left elbow that snaps/crackles/pops with just about every movement. LOL
But like others have said, focus on the moving of the weight, the stretch, the contraction, as opposed to how much you're lifting.
Chest development > chest strength.

Answer:

Started with 45s around December of last year, Yesterday I did 100s for 10 95s for 10 then 90s for two sets of 10 all 4 sets supersetted with overhead db tricep extensions with a 100lberx10 @ ~159lbs.

Answer:

I agree with most here it all depends on your goals. If you are looking to put on size focus more on how many inches you are gaining and less on the weight. If you are just going for strength gain you are doing well. Here's a good example. I can Bench 315 for 3reps, but if we are talking about a bodybulder style bench Press I would have to use about 245 for 10-12 reps. I never try to focus on weight either because if I do that when I am trying to cut out body fat like I am now I would get depressed as my strength usually drops a little.

Answer:

a lot of people think you can't get the volume you need with a low rep set, but you can... just do another set. instead of doing x weight for 3 sets of 10, do x weight for 5 reps and 6 sets but heavier, best of both worlds.

Answer:

I do sets of 8 with 55lbs,And have been training consistently for about 8 months,so yeah your doing good.
