Do you have to be intelligent to play guitar?

Do you have to be intelligent to play guitar?
Personally i think it takes intelligence to think so clear and remember rifts and play them at lightning speed. am i wrong?

Answer:

Eh not really. I am by far not the sharpest tool in the shed, but i have been playing for almost 7 years and i do just fine.

But the problem is when I start playing a song my brain stumbles, i forget, i have to stop and think. My fingers tend to get ahead of themselves and leave my brain behind =/. Im serious too so dont bomb on me. I'm not naturally a quick thinker.

Answer:

intelligent to play guitar? no
intelligent to compose music for the guitar? atleast music that's good? yes

Its great that your trying to learn songs, but you have got to remember to jam out riffs a lot more than trying to learn songs and play them perfectly (Jimi Hendrix, and Toni Iommi never played most of their own songs exactly the same twice). It also helps when you make up your own riffs and songs just by ear, and doing what sounds good to you.
*Edit* so no you don't have to be smart to play guitar, you just have to be creative, dedicated, and motivated

intelligent to compose music for the guitar? atleast music that's good? yes Exactly. I played with a lot of musicians who weren't exactly what you would call smart. Of course they could play really well, but ask them to write some of their own music and they'd give you a blank look or play you something that wasn't very good.
Parrots can repeat words very well, but do you see them forming their own comprehensible sentences? No.
That being said, I think it takes a lot more intelligence to write great quality songs.
If you want to remember riffs and play them at lightning speed, that just takes a lot of determination and practice.

Answer:

Some of the best stuff has come from dumbassed stoners

Answer:

absolutely not!....
now i consider myself intelligent... 1400 sat 4.3 through highschool, graduated from UCSD in 3.5 years...played guitar for about 5...ive taken music theory and composition.... i have no ear....no musical talent whatsover...but have played a long time...and no doubt im not horrible but in no way would i consider myself that good....now where does this story start to make sense you ask...well
a very good friend of mine....dumb as a doornail...d's and c's at my same highschool...barely went to college....is on the 7 year plan to graduate...i sometimes honestly think he has a mental condition becuase of some of the things he does....
can play, compose, and sing like a champ.... he has played less years then me...no musical training .... just an amazing ear and natural musical talent.

In HS my friend who was a super stoner and had a year more of guitar experience than I got outplayed within 3 months of me starting guitar. Instead of just going home and wailing on it and reading tabs, I'd memorize scales and bought a music book about modes and constructing melodies. Sure stoners can produce great stuff (look at Dimebag), but they already knew what they were doing before they got high; being high did not give them some magic ability to produce great music. Heck Dimebag was banned from every guitar competition in Texas because he won every one he entered at the age of 16. Even at that age his knowledge of music theory was already better than those 5 years older than him.
Intelligence DOES come into play. If any dumbass could pick up a guitar and immediately construct a Yngwie Malmsteen type song at 200bpm then everyone would be doing. It takes years learning all the possible ways of playing and then incorporating them into something that is not only musical sound but is pleasing to the ear as well.

That THE way!

Answer:

theres this book, i cant remember the full name of it, but its something like (insert name here) theory of guitar or something. its ****in good.

Answer:

I think that being a great guitar player is a whole different way of being intelligent. A good riff doesn't always have to be technical with all the theory behind it. Dimebag was AWESOME because he knew that. He said "When I tried to play something and screwed up, I'd hear some other note that would come into play, and then I started moving it around and trying different things to find the beauty in it."
Dime is a Legend, a stoner , High School Dropout, and an Amazing guitar hero.

Personally i think it takes intelligence to think so clear and remember rifts and play them at lightning speed. am i wrong? You only need to know the basics (how music is written, put together, scales, etc...) andf a large part of it is intuitive - you FEEL it, it moves through your soul .... or not, depending on whether music is in your soul in the first place. Smart doesn't hurt, but isn't absolutely necessary.

Answer:

to learn music theory? yes. TO play and even play well? NO ****ing way.

Answer:

Mostly feeling and offcourse ==>creativity<==, you do however need to understand the basics.

Answer:

Personally i think it takes intelligence to think so clear and remember rifts and play them at lightning speed. am i wrong? i don't think so b/c i can still play guitar when drunk and stumbling and really in cohrrent. i actually play better cuz i play looser, maybe a little bit sloppy but in general i don't think you have to be a really intelligent person to be a great guitar player. you just gotta have that music in you.

Answer:

everyone is as potentially creative as everyone else. Imo.
