How to avoid the inevitable college food transition?
How to avoid the inevitable college food transition?
I'm going back for my second year of college - this time I am a health freak, and I have been following what I believe is a perfect cutting diet for the past few weeks.
My problem is that many of these foods will not be available in college, and I was hoping I could get some help from people in my situation.
The diet...

Meal Two - 1:00 PM Snack

1/2 Cup spinach/broccoli -Will have to get uncooked veggies and eat them
3oz grilled chicken -No oven/foreman, what to do?

Meal Four - 6:30 PM Post-WO

23g Whey protein with BCAA's
1/2 Cup dry oats

I was hoping you guys know of reasonable alternatives to what I have highlighted in bold.. we can't have rice cookers, grills, or mini ovens - basically I have a minifridge and a microwave.
Honestly it seems as if the only things that I can't get easily are lean proteins, and a source of complex carbs (other than oats), or is it ok to eat oats like 4 times a day?
Don't you have a meal plan for your cafeteria? I always took stuff back to my room. Fruit, cereal, boiled/scrambled eggs, veggies from the salad bar, cold cuts. Just ask for a to go box in the cafeteria.
I have a meal plan but they only allow you to take an apple out of the cafeteria.. I brought some tupperware though, the only thing I know for sure that I will steal is green leafy veggies..
the only possiblity I see though is at the sandwich bar, if I remember correctly they had thin slices of chicken/turkey/beef, I'm thinking of stealing like a lot of those everyday so I can atleast have those for lean protein sources..
My cafeteria said we couldn't take anything out, but I took stuff all the time. Just get to know the people who work there, and for the prices you're probably paying for the food, they owe you something lol.
Eh.. it's not really a problem of getting stuff out, because I plan on eating there only during lunch, and at that time I usually have my bookbag with me so I can just shove the tupperware in there..
the real problem is finding a worthy replacement for lean protein and complex carbs :(
Psssh....
Just stay home. Education is far overrated in comparison to the perfect cutting diet.

Honestly it seems as if the only things that I can't get easily are lean proteins, and a source of complex carbs (other than oats), or is it ok to eat oats like 4 times a day? Everything you put a question mark by about making the food you can make in a microwave. I dorm it as well and dont eat the caf. crap. The food doesnt taste as good coming out of the microwave clearly but it does the trick brah!
you guys are totally not helping him with his questions lol.
okay, about the eggs..eggs can be microwaved. for some reason, microwaving eggs doesn't taste anywhere near as good as microwaving egg products, so i suggest eggbeaters or the like.
there are TONS of options for replacing brown rice. think whole grain crackers/whole grain breads. tons to choose from.
uncooked veggies are good. look for options beside broccoli though, it's hard on the stomach raw. spinach is fine, green beans are surprisingly good raw in a salad, radishes are great, just explore your grocery store. i also suggest buying sprouts (that can be your broccoli..broccosprouts don't have the same gastric effect as their older cousin). keep the sprouts fresh.
also, some canned veggies are quite good. i LOVE canned asparagus. just nuke it and top with some ms. dash. it doesn't get much easier than that.
i think that covers it.
ps: snack on pumpkin seeds, you'll thank me later.
Couple of things-
1) you say "no stove/grill in college". Well, lots of dorms have a kitchen. They get dirty, but then again they are relatively unused so you could get away with it.
2) if you can't afford a george foreman grill (i just got one for my 2nd year as well) or a hot plate (can boil water with), there will be tons of ppl in your dorm that have one. But, there is a george foreman grill out there for 19.99 on amazon (don't have link but you can search it and its there i promise)
3) if the dorm doesn't allow microwaves/grills/hot plates, you can just sneak one in and not let your RA come into your room. Just keep it stashed when you aren't using it. Think about it, you must have smuggled alcohol that technically you werent supposed to have as a freshman into your dorm, may as well get the appliances.
Going back to your cafeteria...these things were designed for students to steal from. Honestly. You shouldn't even feel bad because most meal plans are a rip off anyway (trust me, lots of ppl have done the math). Tupperwares will work great. If you have an all u can eat plan (I did for breakfast and dinner), go to the grill and order 4 chicken breasts and throw them in the tupperware. Problem solved...they won't taste great because they aint marinated but thats what tabasco sauce is for!
Good luck man
Hm.. well we do have a microwave rice cooker at home - I forgot to mention that.
I think a very good idea would be, for the rice atleast, to replace it with 2 slices of whole grain bread.
And as for the lean proteins, are the slices of chicken/turkey that they have at the sandwich bar good enough? They are very thin slices, I think uncooked, but I am thinking I could weigh them out.
As for veggies I doubt they will be a problem, there are usually tons of olives/jalapenos/tomatoes/lettuce/etc. I should be sticking to only green fibrous veggies though right?
Eggs for me are impossible even if I can cook them in the microwave because the nearest grocery store is off campus and I can only get there on the weekends...

Good luck man I can afford a grill, but the problem is I don't have a freezer to store my chicken - and I don't have a car to go to the grocery store every weekend, as it would take me 1-2 hours on a bus..
I agree with you though about your view on the cafeteria stuff. Meal plans are a huge ripoff here, and it is relatively easy to steal from there. Thanks for the advice!
you guys are totally not helping him with his questions lol. We offer general wisdom for life, that, though not specific to one thing, is applicable to all things.
