Is this a bad habit when reading?
I sort of mouth the words in my head when I'm reading a book or piece of literature (not the forums). I can feel subtle movements of my tongue as if I'm saying the word while I'm reading the sentence. However, I feel this allows me to follow the material more accurately and helps me to avoid wandering off. Does anyone else do this? Would this be considered a bad habit because I know it's preached to not mouth the words.
Can't say that I've ever done that, but if it works for you, then go with it.
I fall asleep......now theres a bad habit
If I'm reading a novel, I never mouth the words, I'm usually too engaged in the story.
If I'm studying material that may be difficult or technical, I do indeed mouth words and syntax ocassionally to process them more carefully.

Wow, try reading to a girl, she might like it ;)

don't feel bad I do it too

I swear i'll be reading 2 or 3 pages, and after about 2 paragraphs i'll be thinking of something that happened at work, a girl i talked to...SOMETHING, and i'll be looking at the words in the book but just be thinking of something completely different and it takes me a page or two to even realize i'm not paying any ****ing attention lol
haha I don't actually mouth the words. It's sort of like I can imagine myself saying the words as I read them. Should I adjust this problem? Most people do that, but if you can break yourself of that habit you will learn to read a lot faster. That's one of the techniques always discussed in speed reading books/courses.

If there's other people around, I'll tend to wander off. but when i'm reading for pleasure by myself, i tend not to do it.
but ur edgar allen poe lol i was gonna joke about that too

do you know of anything that can help me? i feel like a loser. Is your goal to improve your reading speed? There are plenty of books that can help. When I started working on my PhD I decided to check into these books, and my reading speed improved a lot, even though I was already a fast reader. Sorry, but I can't remember the title of the book now.

Sorry, but I can't remember the title of the book now. My goal is to grasp the material being read. I don't want to sacrifice my comprehension for reading speed. hmm i'll check out amazon.
but ur edgar allen poo i'm a writer, not a reader
and i'm dead
i'm a writer, not a reader
and i'm dead living in a way you cant detect
My goal is to grasp the material being read. I don't want to sacrifice my comprehension for reading speed. hmm i'll check out amazon. The main points from the book I used were training your eyes to move smoothly across the page, training your eyes to read chunks of words instead of individual words, training your mind to not "read aloud," and a whole bunch of memory exercises. Before you buy a book, check the library. The book I used was in the university library.
I actually simultaneously translate the novel into spanish and american sign language while reading, now that's a bad habit.
