College Majors/Minors (Serious)

College Majors/Minors (Serious)
What exactly is a minor? I mean in terms of a degree. Is it just a side thing added to your major or is it something you could get a job with (i.e. would minoring in accounting allow you to get a job at a bank). And does your minor have to be related to your major (cause if not I'm thinking about minoring in film or something).

Answer:

A minor is another area of study that gives you a general idea of what you need to know in that field. No it doesn't have to be related, but sometimes can help if it is when you're looking for a job
edit: the amount of people that actually work in the field they got their degree in isn't that large, i wouldn't worry too much about that

A friend of mine got a Comp Sci degree with a minor in psychology....

Answer:

I'm a computer science major and I was forced to minor in mathematics. It just does along with my major, and I need to be very proficient in math in order to do well in computer science. Though you'll find some people who minor in something just to have knowledge in another random area.

Answer:

Im a Finance major and will either double major in Accounting or get a minor in economics. Just things that interest me I guess

Answer:

Yeah, they are kinda weird. I'm majoring in Health and Human Performance and minoring in Partying.

Answer:

Does it take longer than four years to finish college as a double major (assuming you don't take summer classes)?

Answer:

Does it take longer than four years to finish college as a double major (assuming you don't take summer classes)? Well at my school Finance/Accounting only have a few varying classes. I think it's just an extra semester to finish out the Accounting classes. It was just an idea I've been throwing around though.

Answer:

I'm not minoring in anything because I don't enjoy any other classes enough to warrant taking more of them - just so i can tell an employer who doesn't give a shit "I have a minor!"
Double majors are usually done in 5 years at most schools.

Answer:

you need 120 credits to graduate and some majors (such as criminal justice at my school) dont go up to 120. mine goes up to about 83 or so so i need to pick a minor. at this point, i might as well double major

Answer:

Does it take longer than four years to finish college as a double major (assuming you don't take summer classes)? It shouldn't, you just can't take as many garbage/easy classes as you would otherwise (e.g. no "underwater basketweaving").

Answer:

Does it take longer than four years to finish college as a double major (assuming you don't take summer classes)? Yes, unless you overload (pay extra for extra classes). A dual major shouldn't. The difference is in a dual major your two majors relate and a lot of the course count for both degrees.

Answer:

I never understood the purpose of a minor... taking classes in other things to gain general knowledge, that would just be electives no? Why call it a "minor"??
I've never heard of anyone using the minor for anything

Answer:

That makes sense. I'll probably just go with a minor in a different area. Part of college is getting to learn what you want to know more about, not just getting a degree for a better job IMO.

Answer:

Thanks for the answers. I have a different college question though. I didn't get on campus housing this year so I'm on the waiting list. Is it possible to move up the list and move on campus next semester? And if not, will being on the waiting list give me first priority next year? Reps for help.

I've never heard of anyone using the minor for anything I minor requires a little depth. It's like a language major. A minor in a language would be about 12-18ish credits where a major in the language would be about 30-40ish credits. It varies from major to major.
I think people just get minors to get their foot into the door for the field or they take them because they don't have the time or money for the major and enjoy the field.

I'm guessing you could cause peole graduate after the fall semester so some stuff should open up that way. Plus some people might drop out and/or get kicked out.
