Super-Depressed, Surgery Woes

Super-Depressed, Surgery Woes
Hi Keto Folks,
Just got back from a doc's appointment to investigate some pain I've been having for a few weeks. Turns out I need a re-repair of a hernia I had repaired back like 10 years ago.
Thinking back to the recovery process, I'll likely be bed ridden for a few days and out of the gym for at least a month.. Well... I might use some of my home weights to do really light upper body work. Still... :(
So I guess my question is what would you reccomend I do in order to keep as much lean mass as possible during my downtime?
I just started a cut after bulking (god this makes me irritated, the sheer timing). Do I stay in a deficit?
Oi... So down about this :( :( :(

Answer:

Oh no, I'm sorry! :(
Well the #1 thing to remember is that when you're healing--whether from a cold or a broken bone or surgery--you're expending more calories than usual and your body is under a lot of stress. Now might not be the best time for a caloric deficit. Remember that maintenance calories do just that- maintain. So if you don't want to put on weight, don't eat excess, but don't shortchange your body right now, because that sounds like a pretty invasive surgery.
When you can start working out again, take it easier. Mentally you're advanced, but treat your body like it's a beginner. Still eat clean, and keep eating maintenance until you're healed. You want to get better as fast as possible. :) Good luck!

I'm just so afraid of looking like Carl when I'm ready to hit the weights again

Thanks GF for the encouraging words and advice.

Thanks GF for the encouraging words and advice. LOL you're welcome :) And don't worry about muscle loss, if you're eating maintenance you'll maintain what you have. You might feel a little awkward when you start back again, but muscle memory will kick in and you'll be back to where you started. A month isn't long enough to really lose strength.

Answer:

I would stay on a straight keto diet, at around maintenance calories. That should give you enough cals for healing, and the keto bit should stop you losing muscle.
Ask in the hospital if you can talk to a physio, and find out what your timetable is for getting back to full workouts. Most people are delighted to find they don't need to work for a month and don't make an issue of it. Chances are you'll be able to do light cardio long before the month is up.
Take plenty of fish oil, a good multi-vit and mineral, and anything that you find boosts your immune system.
Good luck with the surgery.
