Losing too many calories a day slows metabolism?

Losing too many calories a day slows metabolism?
So if somebody needed to eat 2200 calories a day to maintain weight, but they ate about 1700 calories a day and burned off 700 calories a day through excercise, they would be losing 1200 calories a day.
Would doing this be bad for metabolism and would it cause a plateua?

Answer:

I would give some rep points if someone answers this question

Answer:

im not a 100% but im pretty sure that it slows your metabolism because your body is trying to save energy. i actually think it might cause muscle loss though

Answer:

From what I have gathered it is more likely to eat away your muscle, which in turn slows your metabolism. Muscle burns calories right, so if your losing muscle, your losing metabolism.

Answer:

Your body has a engine in it that runs at a certain speed, called your BMR
BMR- Basic metabolic rate
Meaning how many calories your body burns a day without any external variables ( lifting, walking ect..)
If you consume 2300 calories a day and your weight stays the same, then your body is burning 2300 a day
If you lower it to 1700 a day, you'll still burn 2300 for the first few weeks, but your body wants to hold onto as much fat as possible , after a few weeks, your BMR will start lowering itself to 1700 calories a day and this is when you hit a plateau .

This is what I have learned and started to cycle my calories so i could keep my body guessing

Answer:

So is eating more and doing more cardio a good solution?

Good post.. you also want to make sure your BMR is calculated right for high amounts of exercise so you're not consuming too few calories.

Answer:

all so confusing

Answer:

Yes, your body's metabolism does slow. However I have not read anything as dramatic a drop like from 2300 base metabolic rate to 1700 like another poster suggested... but I could be wrong, who knows.
The general "rule" is that you can cut on a 500 calorie deficit almost indefinitely (and eventually, you will cut down to a weight where your old BMR - 500 is your new BMR, now that your body doesn't have all that extra weight it needs to supply energy to maintain). For a 1000 cal deficit which is about 2 pounds of fat per week (and is probably too high a deficit to preserve muscle), you can do it for about a month before your body starts making rapid adjustments to slow its caloric expenditure.

So what do you do then? Assuming you are already on 40 minutes cardio daily and weight training.

Answer:

that means...for example...if i perform cardio at morning ... and lift weights at afternoon..and finish my workout around 7 or 8 pm ...when i get up at morning and i feel tired & my muscles still hurts too much i should rest and perform my cardio post workout? if i perform my cardio in the time im still weak i could be losing muscle?

If you believe your BMR does not decrease after being on a diet for a long time, then why dont people eat 500 calories less then their BMR a day, creating a 3500 calories deficit a week which is 1lb and then loose 365lbs a year?

Answer:

I was reading over on T Nation that what causes your metabolism levels to drop is a decrease in Leptin over time and that a substantial cheat meal once a week can keep things in check. Any truth to that?

Answer:

So how much of a daily calorie deficit can you have with out slowing down your metabolism or using up muscle?

lol... anyways, I agree. Your body can lower it's BMR as quick as in 4 weeks as per my experience. I have personally found that refeeding once weekly helps, along with calorie-cycling. Anyone else noticed the same thing or is it just me?

Answer:

struck, i eat maintaince level cals or just a bit over once a week, after eating below maintaince for 6 days it revs up like crazy the day after the cheat meal, helps from going into starvation mode and makes the deit easy, tomorrow is my cheat day, too ;)
