Hard time gaining weight...

Hard time gaining weight...
Hello all! I'am having the hardest time gaining weight and I have no idea how to counter this. I'm 21, 5'10 and I weight 150, but my goal is to reach about 160lbs. I have experienced different methods, but most seem to fail. I tried mixing 2 gallons of vanilla ice cream with 1 gallon of milk with some hard gainer protein whey and I gained one pound, which disappeared the next day. Just looking for some advice, thanks.

first of all i would advise reading over my bodybuilders grocery list in my signature and then comprise a good 5-6 meals of a good protein source on there with a good carb source, and a fat source
at 5'10 150 lbs i would shoot for nearly 3000 calories a day and see how ur progress goes from there on a weekly basis by weighing urself
so break it down into 5-6 meals a day
eat a piece of fruit/veggies at every meal
get at least 6+ hours of sleep a night
drink around 1 gallon of water
hit the gym for about an hour each session
Lean protein at every meal regardless
go for a 40/40/20 split on macros P/Carb/Fat

Answer:

you need to get complex carbs..Malto Oats, WMS.....
Not nasty simple sugars...gallons of ice-cream is not very clever !

For the future, dont expect to gain 10lbs in 1 day. The reason that 1lb disappeared is that it was mostly water weight and bloat from your binge the day before. Expect no more than 2lbs a week and like previous posters said eat cleaner because i have seen some epic fails from people who had no idea how to bulk and put on massive amounts of fat.

word2yamutha i was at exactly the same point as you 4 weeks ago. here is what i did. I dont know if all this is good advice but its working for me. If your not already part of a gym then go join one right now and make sure you commit 1 hour a day 4 days a week to working out. Weights only no cardio for now!!!
As for diet
Breakfast I'll eat muesli, or plain oats and eat lots of it!!! You want to feel sick after breakfast. Once you have eaten as much as you possible can chug down a weight gain shake with some water.
Through out the day I eat lots of brown rice. I find I can eat heaps of it before I get full and I might eat some canned tuna every now and then.
Post work out I'll have a weight gain shake, tablespoon of sugar, orange and some canned fruit salad.
Dinner will be what ever i feel like but if it doesnt have much protien i will have a can of tuna and make sure I always having veggies.
Before bed I have another weight gain shake but with milk this time, a shot glass of olive oil, a table spoon of peanut butter and some fish oil caps.
Less then 4 weeks ago i was 143lbs. Since then i have gained 13lbs with very little fat. For the past 2 weeks i have been gaining almost 1 lbs a day. No water loading!!!

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I started eating better food yesterday. I work at a restaurant so food is easy to come by. I had 3 hamburgers, 3 talapia, an egg sandwich with cheese, 4 apples, and about a gallon of water. I have a concern about drinking water though. Why should I drink water if there is no calories in it? Wouldn't water be considered a filler? Is it natural to feel sick after eating all that food? I weighed myself last night and it said I gained 3lbs , but I think this was water weight. I just wanted to thank everyone for pointing me in the right direction.

Answer:

Yeah your weight will fluctuate a kilo or two day by day, keep doing what your doing for a few weeks and you should start to notice gains. Don't expect to much straight away but it will come. Having the right amount of water will keep you healthy and it wont fill you up and don't worry about feeling sick from eating to much.

Answer:

Imo don't need to concern yourself with the %/%/% macros.. Eat a shitload of carbs..shitload of protein...moderate amount of fat..See how much you gain.. Too much, reduce portions a little . Not growing, add more to portions.
I don't like counting calories ..calorie for calorie sorta thing. I prefer to estimate myself ^_^

Answer:

Lower it to 2lbs or so .. 250g of protein a day? no way i could obtain that much a day lol.. financially strapped lol

Answer:

I spend most of my day at work so I pretty much have to eat what they have in stock. They have chicken, burgers, salads, pastas, salmon, and tilapia. Well I asked my chef today on how to bulk up and what not, he suggested eating twice of what i was eating regularly and he said about 3000 calories a day. The funny part was that he said it didn't matter what the source were for calories, like fast food. Calories are calories is what he said and it makes since, but I can understand that food is not good for you. Is there a difference between gaining weight and gaining weight through muscle mass? Im confused.

Answer:

Eat 6 meals a day. A lot of carbs and protein. Throw in protein shakes every 2 hours if you can. Try 3 meals with 3 snacks. Protein shakes can count towards your snacks mix it up by adding oatmeal and yogurt for extra calories. Add digestive enzymes to breakdown all the food your consuming.

Answer:

im having the same problem as you but i have much less time to gain the weight than you since i have a two competitive seasons (track) im doing what most people are suggesting (6 meals a day) im not seeing drastic results but i think its working, i'll get back to you in a couple weeks and let you know. but protein powder is definatley a must. OH and the ice cream thing...not healthy but its definately gonna make you gain weight...if you're desperate eat a quart of ice cream a day for like a month. but id suggest the 6 meals a day balance diet.

Eat more food. I'm in this same predicament. I was coming off of a long-term calorie deficit and for my height and weight, at the time, 2500 calories was a pretty tall order for me. I didn't really notice any difference, thought it was just water weight I put on. I then increased calories to a about 2750 and for about a month now I've increased my strength, but checking out pictures, I look the same. I've now moved up to 3000 calories and hopefully will finally see some gains. I've never seen gains because I never ate enough food. Its kind of depressing, but hopefully it'll come. Good luck.

sure i would stick to the chicken, salads, pasta ( if Whole Wheat), salmon and tilapia.. if you need to bank on these items.. but bringing ur own stuff from home will be a lot healthier and better for ur body then filling it with shitty foods like burgers that are higher in fat/sat fat's
sure ur having trouble gaining weight, but u dont want to gain a bunch of bodyfat by eating a bunch of shitty foods.. keeping the diet clean will help build u more towards lean body mass (if this is what ur looking for)
but it mostly comes down to calories in vs calories out.. so keep eating a bunch of clean foods.. and if u cant get ur hands on food i suggest u bring a cooler to work with some homeade shakes from home
mix up some oats, peanut butter, whey protein, milk, and some fruit.. and chug it down when u need to.. its an easy 700 calories or so
you have 3 solid protein sources there, salad is good for veggies.. maybe you have other veggies in there you can add from the resturant.. but its prob better to pack ur stuff healthier/cleaner and u will always have enuogh :)
store it in a fridge there and use the microwave's/grill's at work

Answer:

Whey protien & maltodextrin would be a good idea!
