To Buy the Pre-Owned car or Not to buy, that's the question (help)(reps!)
Hey guys --
So, I'm looking at a blue (not that color matters) 2004 Honda Civic EX Coupe, 2 door. Looks to be in great condition & drives well (took it for a test drive). Carfax is clean.. only 1 owner (it was a lease vehicle from a reputable dealer who only deals with NEW cars - so they auctioned it off for sale) -- it only has 33,047 miles on it!
...the dealer's price is 13,490... but the first visit they took off 90.00... I laughed in my head and left. I like the vehicle, but I'm only a student on a budget. I have full financing available to me, but I'd like to keep the monthly payments lower... so the lower the loan, the better. I'm dropping 2500.00 on the vehicle IF I take it.
The vehicle comes fully loaded as any EX would. Tonight my pops came with me to the dealer... somehow he got the dealer down to 12,800.00 ... but I really don't want to pay over 12,500.00 (If the dealer goes to this price, I'm taking it being it's in GREAT condition) but tell the dealer that he's getting the better half of the deal.
Kelly Blue Book value lists the vehicle @ 14,000.00 in equity & so does my financier. The dealer can't seem to sell the vehicle and it seems like I'm the only interested buyer at the moment. I know it's a buyers market now - car sales are down according to my buddy who deals at a Honda dealer near me (but can't get me any discounts on vehicles since he's a new sales rep - otherwise I'd go through him).
The 12,800.00 is still on the table even though my pops & I left the dealer... as we intimidated the dealer b/c we had done our homework. The thing that also gets me is the warranty is limited to a manufacturers (it's not a certified pre-owned vehicle)... and the manufacturers warranty ends in 1,000 or so miles. Not enough.
I told the dealer I was looking at a civic - same model, etc, etc, etc but it's a C.P.O. w/ a 1 year, 12,000 mile bumper to bumper. He asked how much... I threw a 12,900.00 figure back at him. His heart sank and said, "Wow, that's a tough call." I knew I had him by the balls (no literal)(no homo).
So... for the description of the above... should I TRY to haggle the dealer to 12,500.00 or go for the 12,800.00 in case he scraps the deal when I refuse?
Vehicle is in great condition, but the warranty is almost up and I'm a student on a budget. I'm technically doing THEM a favor by taking it off their hands. Its an expense they don't want or need - is how I see it. Thanks.

Can't really cliff's note this...
I'm still up in the air with my decision.
Thanks.
help?
Call and tell him that you'll take the car for 12.5k and you can come in today to seal the deal.
CLIFFS NICCA I AINT READIN ALL THAT
I would prefer to go with something like an 02 maxima that is around the same price but is a much better car (IMO)
Buy it!
CLIFFS NICCA I AINT READIN ALL THAT Yeah, he really ought to learn to initial his paragraphs. Anyway, I'm starting to develop the philosophy about never buying a new car. Economically, they're the worst investments, losing money as soon as you drive off the dealers lot. Until I make my first million, I think the best I'll ever do is a year end model.
i would wait till he drops to your price. it seems pretty reasonable.
plus, i am not sure if you know but leased cars arent the greatest. if i leased a car, i would drive the shit out of it in mind that i have warranty and its not mine forever.
calls them couple times a week to see if they are still interested in your price. pretty soon they will give in.
maybe try calling other dealerships so you can haggle with them saying so and so offered this.

As for the vehicle, it is a 2004...nor am I leasing the vehicle. Additionally, I'm a college student with limited funding capabilities with a financier at a very good interest rate - so that's my benefit, but regardless it's for 60 months at around 220.00 a month + 164.00 for insurance
I used car you should be able to get 10-15% of so that is so thats about 12100 so you should be ableto get him down lower. The only problem is that deal sometimes only applies if you are playing upfront in cash, with finance you prob wont be able to get that highg a mark down.
You are a student i wouldnt go tying all your money up into a car this expensive

You are a student i wouldnt go tying all your money up into a car this expensive That's why I'm getting the Civic. It's a very reliable vehicle... I work 2 part time jobs. I know I can make payments on the vehicle on time and I have one year left in undergraduate. This vehicle is for the long term. I have been searching for a reliable vehicle for some time - being I'll be driving between Amherst, Massachusetts and Providence, RI often enough I need a good, solid car to do so that I can trust won't f*ck up midway through the trip.

you forgot to add " and also a car that will impress the ladies"
you forgot to add " and also a car that will impress the ladies" If I wanted a car to impress the ladies I would've gone with something a little more sporty or a little higher end. I like the 2d coupe b/c I can claim, "no DDing for me - I only have a 2 door." Granted I would have a backseat, but anyone drunk wouldn't comprehend that fact while intoxicated.
Bottom line is I would like to purchase this vehicle as a reward to myself for all the hard work i've done in undergrad (this being my final year) and its known reliability for the long term. I wish to attest my responsibility by doing so - double majoring, minor + a CPT & 2 part time jobs while maintaining a relatively high GPA (and a girlfriend for the last year and a half - until recently).
In my senior year of college I think I finally deserve a vehicle - being I've never owned one of my own before nor had a vehicle on campus. I'm sick of begging friends to let me borrow their vehicles. I've browsed the newpapers clippings, autotrader.com & cars.com for anything that seems of value - and when I stumbled upon this Civic... I knew it was meant to be :D
All I'm asking from the misc section of bb.com is if it really is a value to me.
Where i live if you are buying a vehicle, especially from the dealer, you have to take into account all the extra costs they will throw in after the deal, like government 5% or whatever surcharges and all the other extra things. Like my dad found a car for 24k and he got it down to about 21k or less but then to put it on the road and etc he had to pay the extra surcharges which end up costing another 1.5k.

According to the dealer... the only charges he has for us are the 7% sales tax + runner fees/title which is 90.00 total I believe
Tax comes out to ~900.00
Owner of the dealership says there are no other fees (if there are - I walk away)

Owner of the dealership says there are no other fees (if there are - I walk away) Maybe government taxes ? ;) That would suck. I get from a private dealer and try not to get it taxed (yes illegal) ;). But if the car is stolen then they take it away from you and you can't do anything about it even if you payed the person your money.

The dealer didn't mention it, but when I overlook the invoice for my intended purchase I will definitely make note to look out for 'misc' fees that have been tacked on. I only agreed - if I purchase the vehicle - to pay the alotted price we agree on + the state tax (7%) & the title fees.
