Greenville County Sheriff's authorities are investigating the death of a 7-year-old boy whose mother says a knife-wielding carjacker locked himself in her car and smothered her son with a pillow late Sunday night.
Devon Epps of Greenville was pronounced dead at Greenville Hospital System's Children's Hospital, Greenville County Deputy Coroner Karie Cain said this morning.
The mother told deputies that she was driving with her son on an Interstate 85 frontage road near White Horse Road around 10:30 to 10:45 p.m. Sunday, Sheriff's Master Deputy Michael Hildebrand said.
When she stopped at a stop sign at the frontage road's intersection with Jacobs Road, a man wielding a knife opened the Honda passenger door where the boy was sitting and told him to get in the back seat, Hildebrand said.

The carjacker -- described as a white man in his late 30s to early 40s with reddish hair and a beard and wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt -- demanded she drive to a wooded area near the intersection, Hildebrand said.
The carjacker told the mother to get out of the car, Hildebrand said. The carjacker locked himself in the car with the boy and put a pillow over the boy's face, he said.
The mother struggled to get inside the car, Hildebrand said. Once she did, she suffered non-life-threatening injuries to her arm, he said, and was treated at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Epps was pronounced dead at 11:42 p.m. at the hospital, Cain said.
Authorities searched the wooded area but didn't find anyone, Hildebrand said. Investigators are still seeking more witnesses and have no other suspects currently.
Flyers bearing a sketch-artist rendering of the suspect have been distributed around the area.
