As the Fairmont Heights High School football team gets ready for the start of practice next week, the Hornets will prepare for a season that might feature standing-room-only crowds at home games.
Has the school hired a hot new coach?
Have top prospects enrolled after a 2-8 season?
Nope.
There might not be any bleachers.
A neighborhood resident has been charged with entering the Capitol Heights school's stadium while classes were going on, using a socket wrench to undo bolts and screws and taking the aluminum seats to sell to a recycling center.
Francis Maurice Harper, 46, took most of the bleachers in February, was arrested, then returned in April to finish the job, according to a statement of charges filed by Prince George's County police. The cost of the seats, according to the statement of charges, was approximately $9,600.
"I couldn't believe that it happened," Fairmont Heights Coach Stefan Gansert said. "It was brought to my attention [by a player] and I still didn't believe it until I walked around back and physically saw it. How could someone do this to the kids?
"I've got nuts and bolts and screws. He even had the audacity to steal my benches that were on the field because they were aluminum, too."
According to the police statement of charges, on Feb. 12 at 8:45 a.m. an officer assigned to Fairmont Heights witnessed Harper "loosening the remaining sections of school bleachers . . . approached the defendant and not only learned that the defendant had no business on school property, but that he was attempting to discard the socket wrench he was using." On April 26 at 7 a.m., the statement of charges said, patrol officers responding to a report of someone loosening the bleachers stopped Harris a short distance from school property.
Harper was originally charged with trespassing on school grounds, damaging school property, attempted theft with a value of less than $500 and attempted theft with a value of more than $500. In found guilty of all counts, Harper could face up to two years in prison and/or $29,000 in fines. For the April incident, he was charged with theft with a value of more than $500, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine if found guilty.
Later in February, Harper allegedly stole a van; he was arrested in March and charged in connection with that crime. Harper has been in jail since Aug. 3 because he failed to appear for a pretrial hearing in that case. The April incident is scheduled for trial Aug. 31. A trial date has not been set for the February incident.
"It's unfortunate students would have to suffer because of the greed of individuals having little respect for schools and athletics and the importance of our facilities being top-notch," said Earl Hawkins, director of athletics for Prince George's County. "That facility was just upgraded."
Now, though, without the benches in place, the bleachers are dangerous, with jagged pieces of metal sticking out from the risers. Gansert said he will advise parents to bring seating and plans to ask his church if he can borrow seats on game days.
The thefts were covered by insurance, Hawkins confirmed, and it is hoped the seats will be replaced before the start of the season.
But if not, standing the entire game won't be the only challenge for fans at Fairmont home games. They'll have to keep track of the score and time remaining, too. According to Gansert, the stadium's two-year-old scoreboard was left inoperable after vandals riddled it with gunfire.
"You laugh about it, but you've got to keep fighting," Gansert said. "I'm not going to let this stop me from teaching kids. . . . Hopefully, somebody in the county will step up to the plate and help out the school.
"People ask, 'What's your crowd size going to be?' Standing room only. Better get there early."
