Every part of it was pre-planned.
Yes, he was indeed just a fan who jumped the rail. Its amazing how suddenly he learned to take bumps and perform and sell wrestling moves isn't it?
there is no way they would have a fan just suddenly go in the ring. if the fan got hurt, lawsuits up the buttocks. duh
like they did with the masterlock challenge, they hired an indy wrestler to play a crowd member and accept the challenge. that way, if a real crowd member got injured, WWE wouldn't be seud, and the guys from say OVW were bigger than the average crowd member, making masters look better.
but santino was obviously a trained wrestler for years, they probably just didn't know how to bring him into the WWE.

^ Dat der is one DUMB son of a bitch. :D kayfabe confuses casual fans. a friend of mine, a long time wrestling fan, knows more about wrestling in the mid 90's than i do even (same age), asked me once if the mcmahons were actually related... i gave him a blank stare.
kayfabe is also the reason some idiots sent in flowers to WWE headquarters when vince 'died' LOL.
btw, your sig... "why benoit, why?" - why is it, i can only read that in J.R's voice, if you get me. i think it's because he said "why triple h, why!?!?" or the same with austin, so many times.

As for "Why Benoit?":
Well, that's just what I keep asking myself, still. I still can't believe he did something like this but he did and although he was a hero to me, I've now lost every bit of respect for him. :( I guess I'd have an idea as to why. I don't know enough about interaction but apparently he did have some psychiatric issues (which he should have seeked help for) and steroid use could have played with whatever meds (like xanax & hydrocodone) he was taking. I've been on steroids before and at times I know the doctors had trouble adjusting my different blood levels and controlling my meds.
Eh, I don't know if we'll ever know the real reason behind what he did, but I'm certain he regrets it now and would take it all back and seek help if given another chance.

There is a simple rule of thumb- if somebody jumps the guard rail and security takes them down or they get to the ring and either the ref or the wrestler punches them then it is a legit idiot, if they jump the rail and security ignore them then they are a plant and security is clued in on this.
