Over-doing it with the supplements?

Over-doing it with the supplements?
I'm finding it somewhat difficult to eat enough (I'm an ectomorph). For many of my meals (especially the pre and post workout) I'm not getting enough carbs and/or proteins. I've been supplementing with 1 scoop of protein powder or maybe a couple of scoops of an after workout drink (has carbs and proteins). Is it bad to do this on a daily basis? Should I just try to find other foods to eat to supply my body with the remaining nutrients instead?

Answer:

real food is always better than supplementing (except maybe post workout), but using protein for one or two meals a day shouldn't hurt you at all.

Answer:

IMO whey protein powder should be kept to around workout time, either before, after and/or during your workout. This is only because real food is not a good choice for when your body is all anabolic on your ass, so you need that fast-digesting whey during that time period.
But besides that, there's no real "advantage" to having whey protein during the day, as a food substitute. It digests too quickly, isn't a complete meal and will leave you hungry.

I understand whey protein doesn't have any real advantages over just raw food protein, I just mix it in because sometimes I find it hard to get my carb/protein/fat ratio in every meal and thus not getting my total count for the day. For example, in the morning I'll eat a couple of English muffins with a light spread of butter for my carbs/fat then 1 scoop of whey for my protein. The only reason I think it might be over-doing it is because I also take supplements post workout, sometimes pre-workout and maybe at night before bed, almost always with food each time but overall it just seems like a bit much, eh?

Answer:

I really don't think you're overdoing it with supplements, as long as you're also getting solid meals. I personally have 50 grams of whey in the morning with my 6 eggs and bowl of oatmeal. Then, maybe 15 minutes after lunch, I'll have 25 grams of whey. Pre-workout I take creatine, post workout I take a hydrolized whey/carb protein shake, then eat 2 cups of yogurt. evening will consist of a blender mix of 50 grams of whey, 5 egg whites and milk. As you can see, I take a lot of supplements. I ussually get 3-4 solid food meals per day in addition to all the supplements.

if not start making some homeade shakes.. use egg whites / milk / peanut butter/ oats / whey / fruits / veggies / cottage cheese
the cals will rack up
but having whole food is def much more nutritious and beneficial to the body
but if ur sticking to 2 shakes a day 1 being with breakfast and 1 after ur workouts.. that is fine man .. ur not over doing it..
i would cut the shake before bed and go for some caesin protein such as cottage cheese, milk, or caesin protein

Answer:

You can use protein powder just fine, but whole food is still the best choice.
Personally, I can't stand you guys who "have a hard time eating enough". If I could eat entire herds of cattle without getting fat, I sure as hell would.

Only thing I find difficult w/ eating enough is getting the funds to buy all my food lol. It can get pretty expensive sometimes, but I generally find ways around it and manage to get all my requirements.

go to the cafe.. stock up on cottage cheese, fruits, tuna, chicken, eggs, hard boiled eggs, veggies, whole wheat breads
go back to ur room.. stock up the fridge/freezer
and enjoy! :)
