What are you fishing for? sounds like bass? yes sir, bass. I have used jitter bugs, frogs, a mouse (LOL?), floating rapala. I have to be doing something wrong.
yes sir, bass. I have used jitter bugs, frogs, a mouse (LOL?), floating rapala. I have to be doing something wrong. are there any smallies in the river? For river smallies I myself like to use small rapalas that sink 5-8 feet.
I cant use anything that sinks. There is way too much algae and shit out there. thanks for helping. And yes there are some smallies out there.
We have the dog days of summer bad here with all the darn algae floating on top of the water. I have had luck with silver spoons, silver cleos, mepps spinners. Anything bright and flashing to get their attention through all that green shit in the water. With a moderate to quick retreival I can keep them right on top of the water. I got my largest bass on a silver cleo.
I cant use anything that sinks. There is way too much algae and shit out there. thanks for helping. And yes there are some smallies out there. go get some High Floating Ribbets, they don't sink and run like a buzzbait over the mat. It might be they have what they need under the mat and don't feel the need to come up. Try this, we use this at Guntersville when the grass get thick. Get a 1/2 oz barrel weight and rig it above a Texas rigged plastic worm. Cast it up in the air, as in up so it comes down vertical and penetrates the grass mat. Then just work it like a worm, get it out and do it again. The grass will grow up then lay over on top of the water adn make a shelf. Under it is fishable water if you get under it so if the 1/2 oz lead don't work throw an ounce that will get through it.
i haven't seen a Thordic post in a while. What's new man?
How fast is the current?
Have you tried poppers, jitterbugs and spooks (slow current), or torpedos (swift current)?

Not even a Silver Minnow with pork rind? That is old school there. I haven't used that in years for some reason. I threw those when I was younger in Florida but when I moved to Mississippi I didn't use it very often.
A fluke is great in teh evenings around grass, it has a weedless hook and glides through pretty stealthy. Last summer I showed my boy a fluke for the first time and he thought it was the seceret to fishing. I use them in the late summer around 7:30 to dark, can get your wrist broke.
I guess the more advanced fishing gets the more fishermen move away from the messy Uncle Josh bottles that leak or bust in your boat storage box. I need to go back and find one before the end of the summer and see what happens. Have to wait until the water get under 90 degrees though. It was 96 last night at 8:30. I'll just sit and make my fall crankbaits till it cools off.
Where in mississippi are you at? I lived there for a number of years. Repped all I could for now.
Contract killer not much man, I dont post as much as I use to.
Oh yeah and there is 0 current where I am fishing.

Oh yeah and there is 0 current where I am fishing. I live in Smithville, its between Tupelo and Columbus. I guess Amory is the biggest town that is close. I live 2 miles from the Tenn Tom and we fish tournaments there most of the summer. I havn't had much time for the Thursday night ones but I get in atleast one a month on Saturday. I make custom crankbaits for the guys that actually fish alot. I was going to ask you what water you are fishing, that would help me figure out what will get those bass in your livewell.

(Right outside of tupelo) There is a nice lake there in saltillo with some monster crappie......
HSHAHAHAHA I lived in saltillo for 6 years. (Right outside of tupelo) There is a nice lake there in saltillo with some monster crappie...... yeah, the water shead. They won't let anyone fish it anymore unless you sneak in. I was an estimator at Graham roofing on Bauhaus dr in Saltillo for a while. Now I work in Columbus. Do you know Bill Smith in Saltiillo? He's about 40 or so. He has most of the deer mounts in the restaurants donated from his trophy wall.

It was a real nice lake as much as I can remember. It was going strong 5 years ago. I dont know Bill Smith
you need to give the lure constant sharp jerks and keep reeling, lure shouldn't be too large. you need to make as much noise with it as possible. what are you using?
black buzzbait has caught alot of fish. If you really want a reaction strike go for a black buzz with a clacker. Also hold the buzz out the window for about 20 minutes of driving 50mph. This will get the buzz squeaky as hell and really irritates the fish. As for frog, never tried it. jitterbug tried a few times caught nothing.

I dont know Bill Smith I forgot about Lamar Bruce, everyone that catches the big crappie got them at the water shed lake. There are some big bream at Lamar Bruce too. I used to go down there and test crankbaits off the fishing piers. I never got to fish it too much, just bait testing. I did try out a new boat on that lake and had the motor quit and paddle back to the ramp. That sucked.
bass don't use algae as cover, that's your first problem. it actually makes it harder for them to forage
bass don't use algae as cover, that's your first problem. it actually makes it harder for them to forage The smaller fish do like bream. They feed off the algae and the bugs and crap that lives in it. That is why the better boat docks to fish are the ones that have algae on the posts. You are correct, if it is full of algae in the grass the bass will relate to something else closer like a blowdown or dock, but for feeding they will be on the edge feeding on the little ones that move in and out of it. If it is just a mat of grass like I thought he was origionally posting about everything will be in there using it for cover and forage. Sounds good anyhow, I'm not on the FLW tour but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Jitterbugs work incredibly well...
Just make sure you are out real early in the AM or late in the evening when using them. I have had tonnes of success with a red/white combo jitterbug.
Poppers!
I've had good luck in many conditions and many species, including a couple muskies, using cork or balsa poppers of various size. I have a bunch in all sorts of colors/patterns, like these:

What he is trying to get away from is lures that have bulky profile(and grab the grass and alge) or the lures that have bottom hanging or pointing hooks. You got to get to where the fish are. Most of the baits listed will not run through the mat of grass and slime he is trying to fish it. Think, Slug-go, or a Fluke, or scum frog. Those baits are stream lined and/or have hidden concealed hooks that won't get caught in the junk. Look at my body space pic. That is a golden shiner minnow that I was hooking up for bass bait to fish in the grass.
