length of bar

length of bar
I have a space issue and I'm hoping someone can help me with some information. I have a small workout room - 8 feet 6 inches wide. I want to use a cage or rack of some type but they all require a 7 ft olympic bar which only leaves me 6 inches on either side of the bar for changing weights. I know that Olympic bars can also be found in 6 foot lengths but the ones I have seen when surfing the net wouldn't work because the inside grip width (distance between the collars) would be too short. Someone in this forum mentioned that he had seen a 6 foot bar that had the same grip width as a 7 foot bar - the only difference was that 6 inches had been lopped off each end reducing the the available length for sliding plates on. This reduction at the ends of the bar is no big deal to me. If anyone could give me advice on where to find a bar like this it would be greatly appreciated. By the way I'm from Canada and our selection seems to be more limited than in the U.S.
Thank-you.

Answer:

yeah here it's harder to get most stuff but you should just check out fitness depot, i bought 5' and 7' olympic bars which were pretty good.

hope i've helped.
oh i forgot you said 6' is too short, sorry

Answer:

I have seen a 6' bar....but if you get a cage, just position it diagonally and that will buy you some additional space on either side to put your plates on.

6' foot bar with 50" grip width. Thought about one of these myself, but I went with a 7' bar instead. Then again, I am working with just over 9' room width so I have a bit more space than you. At 8'6", I would probably try one of the 6' bars.

Exactly!
That's it! Thank-you very much!
