Going to China For 2 Weeks!!!

Going to China For 2 Weeks!!!
I am going to China for 2 weeks on a Family Vacation, but id like to keep my diet in check.
Does anybody have tips on "What to do" or "What to order" or "What to avoid" in China?
Chinese Cuisine in the U.S. is my downfall so im a bit fearful .
Also going to Korea ;) But hey, its Korea :D

Answer:

The best advice that I can give you for goin on vaca...is forgetting about your diet for a couple weeks and enjoying yourself. I used to stress so much about what/when I was going to eat, if the food was going to be too fattening/carb dense, where was I going to get my protein!??! Then I realized...I'm still a kid, and it's called vacation for a reason.
Just kick it back and enjoy your time off. Who wants to stress over diet and stuff on their vacation? Plus, I'm sure authentic korean/chinese/japanese food is MUCH better than anything you get here in the U.S.

Plus, I'm sure authentic korean/chinese/japanese food is MUCH better than anything you get here in the U.S. im planning on enjoying myself to the fullest, just like to get some pointers on what food groups i should avoid :D Its how i enjoy myself :) Eating healthily but deliciously

Answer:

alot of dog and cat lol

Answer:

I'm sure you already know what to eat and not eat... a lot of fat will make you fat, and you know you need protein in order to maintain some muscle if you're not working out while you're there. Enjoy yourself, but do it responsibly and don't overeat every day.

Answer:

Achilles is giving u good advice . . .
The one "pointer" I'll give u is just 2 use some common sense & avoid greasy or sugary dishes where u can, like anything deep fried, pork & duck dishes, things that come w/ sweet or greasy sauces, etc. I'd favor steamed or stir-fry dishes, stick 2 chick & seafood where possible.
Above all have a good time, don't spoil it by obsessing & worrying about every little thing u eat, its only 2 weeks & after all u r still a teenager.
Enjoy ur vacation & tell us all about it when u get back! :)

Answer:

along the lines of skinny here..
avoid all the sauces and whtanot they put on their chinese dishes, but other then that anywhere you go out to eat you should be fine.. a lot of places there have grills where you pick out what you want and they will fire it up in front of ur eyes
i hope you got a big appetitie for chicken and veggies because that is the cleanest thing ull come across everywhere.. along with rice
they will also fire it up with healthy oils such as olive oil on the grill for you
while shopping around they do sell US foods there, just might be a bit more expensive in china then in the USA.. if i were you buy a 2lb container of whey for ur 2 week trip its easy to carry and protein if ur in desperate need
other then that i think ur good to go..
enjoy ur time dont really worry about the diet.. u dont get to do it too often bro have fun and kick back and enjoy a different cuisine and test all the foods possible :) the more the better

Answer:

I just came from Korea, eat plenty of bulgogi and stay away from Kegogi (well unless you really want to try it). Not sure about China, but I know the US tends to make Chinese food a lot better than what it really is. Plenty of veggies and rice and weird oddities is what you'll really find, but just be careful where you eat also. They aren't the cleanliest of people down in those regions either.

And
How ignorant are YOU ?

Answer:

How ignorant are YOU ? I gotta agree with this. America has definetly americanized chinese food, deep frying everything and adding all their disgusting sauces to everything. True authentic japanese/korean/chinese food is truely healthy and delicious. Christ, I would actually look forward to vaca in a foreign country like that due to all the delicious types of food.

Answer:

while his statement could be taken as "racist" or "ignorant", cleanliness actually CAN be an issue with street food. Regardless of how "clean" in body-building terms a food is, raw meat might be kept alongside cooked meat in some street vending areas, and bugs usually chill there too. If you're healthy, a little bacteria might not be a big deal...but still, take it easy when you first get there, try to buy from busier, more popular stands (if you do get food on the street) and if you go outside of big cities, be careful of things cooked with or containing water.
BTW what's wrong with chinese food in america? I've had some pretty good stuff without disgusting sauces. :)

^ ^ ^ ^ ^^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^^ ^ ^ ^ So tell me have either of you been to Korea? I have seen first hand how clean they are down there, and how good they are about cooking in those areas. Racist? Give me a break, I guess you haven't seen those areas yet then huh.

I knew vendors that would let their food sit out in the open for bugs and whatnot to collect on them, and they'd still sell it. I knew places that would recycle food and drinks, so please, save your insults, I've seen it first hand so I know what I'm talking about. To the original poster, have fun in Asia, just watch out.

I guess your case here is : You only know what you see.
I have been to Korea and Lived in China
They aren't the cleanliest of people down in those regions either. Thats what I had a problem with. Be specific if you meant the food. Bet you wouldnt say that if it wasnt a message board.End of topic.
To the Original Poster. Be smart enough to know what to avoid. Eat in restaurants. There are some street vendors in China which are actually OK but if your thinking twice about it at the moment dont bother. Dont worry. Your gonna have a great time.

Answer:

I live in China.
People in china don't tend to cook food at home, since the restaurants are cheap enough. So you're going to find it very easy to stuff your face for very little money.
If you go into any exotic restuarants, with no english translation, meat normally has the character: 肉 (rou), incase you are woried about ordering intestines, stomach, etc. And vegetables are: 菜 (cai) which are normally fried vegetables (non western).
If you're stuck with options, there is always pizza hut, mcdonalds, subway in most places.
Also rice is allways white rice, so if you're a health freak (like me), you'll have to go to shops for brown rice to cook yourself.
I can't recommend any dishes since I'm vegetarian, and hardly eat out.
But depending on what city you goto, there will be enough english translation in the menu.

All correct observations.
China is not the most sanitary of places any possible way you look at it. Despite that, I love the place, and will be moving to Hong Kong fairly soon.

if American food is that much better why are we the most obese country in the world? that might be a shocker to you! our country is filled with sugar coated bullshit, and fat lazy bastards.. at least over in china they ride bikes and shit.. all you see here in America is fat bastards driving in their cars eating out every second of the day..
it seems like each generation cooking is loosing its trend and fast food is the way to go.. i cant even walk into half the fast food places without feeling sick such as McDonalds.. it has its own distinct smell while walking through a mall or driving by on the street
In China you will have to do some cooking if you want to avoid an overdose of a mixture of spices/sauces and also getting away from whtie rice etc etc
eating out is fairly cheap, but you can over indulge.. so satisfy yourself and s ave the rest for the next day.. there is a lot of deep fried stuff so watch what you order
if you can get it grilled off a mongolian grill etc its much healthier
B a few tips i listed above.. hope they help

B It's not my fault you jumped to conclusions, I'm not going to bother going further into that.

One of the best things about visiting China and Korea would be for their cuisine. It's nothing like it is here. If you decide to skip out on a lot of the meals because you think you'll get fat, that's your loss in the long run. You're 19. You're going to visit China and Korea, how many chances will get to do that in your entire life time? Better now while your hormones are raging and your metabolism is sky high compared to if you go when you're 30. Just my 2 cent. I know if I went, I would want to try everything with any kind of sauce they have but of course in moderation. I wouldn't eat as much as I can all day. I would spread it out.

That's true, I was in Korea, hell I was 20 when I was in Korea and I was there for a year. Definitely a unique experience in foods far from what you'd find in the US. The US tends to make fast food versions of Asian cuisine, so a lot of people are shocked when they find out how much better the real stuff can be. Although I would still completely avoid some places in Korea, there was a ton of good food to find. Although the smell of fish and veggies down in some areas was overpowering, but that's Korea for you. I'm going to Japan at the end of this month, looking to try some real authentic Japanese food.

Answer:

I live in Hong Kong. Oregon dude, when are you moving? Give me a shout.
Where in China are you going? The food up there can be really good or really shitty, depending where you go. The cleanliness thing can be an issue. There are a lot of pesticides and toxins in the food supply out there. When I go to China, I try to eat at the best possible places, which are still darn cheap.
I've worked in enormous kitchens in NY and Louisiana and believe me, y'all don't wanna see what goes on back there. ;) I pride myself on my food hygiene, but not everyone who wears an apron cares as much as I do.
Good luck and enjoy! :D The Chinese food will be significantly better (and tastier) than your regular Chinese takeout in the States.
