So, Singapore......
So, Singapore......
I'm off to Singapore next week for work and, whilst I will be pretty busy with work, I think I shall have evenings free and should be able to make some time in the day for shopping !
Anyone got any recommendations of particular things to buy, places to shop and/or places to visit and sights to see (other than having tea-cake with PetitCherie's mum:) ) ?
I've only ever stopped in the airport before on my way to Australia...but I've managed to do some damage to my credit cards there so I suspect I shall have some fun when they let me outside.
Answers:
Drink: Singapore Slings at the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel
Shop: All shopping centres on Orchard Road - literally, you can buy anything!
Shirts: Are you after bespoke? I can let you have details for my tailor ;)
I imagine you are staying somewhere central so no difficulty getting around!

thanks PC (knew you'd be able to help;) ). I don't think I'll have time for tailoring as I can't guarantee I'll be able to get away more than once to go for fittings and/or to pick up items. but, if you could give me the details anyway that would be great - just in case.
Yes, I'll be fairly central. I'm at the Marina Mandarin - I've already sussed out that they have a patisserie with Afternoon Tea:munch: .
So, is it mainly boutique and shopping centre shopping rather than markets ? Is there anywhere that does good here knock-offs (i'm quite keen to buy some more Birkins) ? And, if there is a market is the expectation to bargain or is fixed price shopping the norm ? And are credit cards widely accepted or should I cash up ?
Business-wise - how do people dress bearing in mind its 32 degrees there at the moment ? Would wrap dresses, sheer tights and courts be acceptable, can I get away with not wearing tights if its hot (not that I ever did this when I practised in Australia....). And, final question !, do people start work early and/or work late ? I'd like to know before I start asking for 5pm or 8:30am meetings - in case that is unreasonable.
THANKS !!

Well, the Marina Mandarin is ever so slightly off the main bits (but Singapore is so small, it makes no diff) and it has its own shopping centre attached, tho it's pretty rubbish. You're walking distance of the Esplanade and all the shops and restaurants - don't you if you're with Mr Ellie but rooftop dining at Al Dente on the Esplanade is rather romantic.
Cards accepted widely, tho not so much Amex. Cash for the smaller shops if you go to any "suburb" type areas.
Bags: Never found any really good ones myself, tho you'll get the usual fakes in night markets ("Pasar Malam") in suburb areas - sadly, it's not the season for it at the moment.
If you do want to go to little shops away from town, go to Toa Payoh - plenty of unusual things but it will be hot and muggy - you'll want a guide too (I volunteer my mother, she's cool like that! recently showed one of my partners and his girlfriend around Spore)
Try Far East Plaza on Scotts Road for civilised small quirky shops (esp in the basement) but be warned sizes are generally tiny - i usually can't wear them! good for accesories etc tho
Tea at Scotts Lounge at the Hyatt on Scotts Road (next door to Far East Plaza) is lubbberly too
Don't bother wearing tights, it is TOO HOT you will melt. People having shocking office attire, the number of mini cocktail dresses and open toe sandals I've seen ewwwww Wrap dresses and courts will be fine.
bit of an essay!
