Altering a pair of tights

Altering a pair of tights
I have this very unusual pair of fishnet tights they are black and red. I've worn them a lot but unfortunatly the bum of them is getting worn out so I could do with a new pair. But I can't find a new pair they came from TK Maxx and they of course no longer stock them and nowhere else seems to either.
I have come up with a rescue plan, but i'm not sure whether it will work. If I sowed some elastic to the thighs of the tights then cut off the top of the tights will I be transformed into hold ups, or will they just disintigrate?

Answers:

I tried this something similar once...
I cut the top off some tights and the silicone bit off some cheap hold ups and tried to make new hold ups from the legs of the tights and the silicone band bit.
It worked, but they weren't comfortable enough to wear. I used a zig zag stich but the tops ended up not being stretchy enough and digging in.
Also... I think fishnets might be harder to work with than 'solid' tights.

I would have thought they would just unravel?
