dressmakers?

dressmakers?
1 Attachment(s) I'm wondering whether any of you have ever approached a dressmaker wanting some kind of replica of an item of clothing that you've seen, and whether things were successful or not.
I've fallen in love with this Rachel Pally dress, and even if it weren't last season's stock, I wouldn't be able to afford it. So I'm contemplating making inquiries with a dressmaker to see if I could get something similar made.
Thanks.

As a dressmaker(not professional), I find it difficult to understand why people think that you can "just run-up something like this", cue small picture emerging from here. I can cut patterns but most dressmakers can't and unless you can find a similar pattern and fabric you're probably on a hiding to nothing. Good quality fabric of the type that Rachel Pally uses is very diffficult to find and usually rather expensive. Having a bespoke garment made should not be considered a cheap alternative to buying a designer garment. If you can sew yourself them that's a completely different story.

Thanks for that.
I had no idea really how these things work, hence my asking. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to show a picture and magically get an copy for next to nothing. I mean, presumably a dressmaker would be able to help me find a pattern and choose a suitable material to make something in the general vein of the item. No? :o

As Pansymouse said not all dressmakers can cut patterns but you could try looking on http://sewingpatterns.com/ to see if they have something similar.
I'd recommend learning to sew. It's nice to be able to make something that's original and also really handy for altering clothes.

Thanks for the link.
I'm okay with altering things, and when I was younger I was always making clothes for my dolls  I've always liked doing things with my hands, and I have some material for making skirts over the summer. Dresses, however, are far too adventurous for me at the moment! I will take some proper lessons at some point in the future.
