O/T Sudden house moving panic!

O/T Sudden house moving panic!
I spoke to the solicitor this afternoon and she's putting forwards next Friday for our exchange date on the new house, which is fantastic.
But (and this is a BIG but...) it's suddenly dawned on me that I haven't a clue what we do about the phone/internet.
I know the current owner has broadband, so I assume she'll cancel it when she leaves? But then do we need to call our provider and ask them to change it over? Will we need the new phone number? And how long will I be internet-less for?! :faint:
And I guess we'll need to do the same for gas/electric. I assume she'll leave details of her current provider so we can get signed up with them?
Oh god. Please calm me down!

Not menaing to be stalkerish by being the first to reply after just sending you an essay of a pm ;) but
Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep breaths. TBH, I have no idea what you should do, but someone else on here will and even if it leaves you internetless for some weeks, taht's not too bad is it? If there's anything really important, an internet cafe will be the trick. You will have your mobile.
Don't worry, even if worst comes to worst, it's nothing to make yourself ill over :)

this can be major pain in the arse.
i didn't have a problem with the internet, i use the same provider the people before had and it seemed like they hadn't bothered to turn it off because the day i came for the engineer to switch it on it was already working before he got here  the phone is with the same company so that was easy too.
gas/electricity on the other hand
i took over their electricity account and that was all fine. but then this provider was also supposed to take over my gas. they started taking the direct debits out and all was fine and dandy or so i thought. until i got a bill from the previous provider. i won't bore you with all the details, but i moved in in sep '04 and finally got it sorted out a couple of weeks ago :faint: they'd taken over a meter that was in the house i live but not in my flat
she should leave you all the details, if not, just wait for the gas/electricity bill

Hi Bibbity!
If the old owner isn't taking the telephone number with her, find out what it is and ring BT (or your phone provider) - what they do is switch your old phone/account off at noon on the day you leave, and switch on your new phone/account on at noon in the new place - as long as they don't need to send an engineer out to do something at the phonebox/exchange (that would take longer).
The broadband will take a bit longer to set up, as you will have to get a new account but shouldn't be more than a week, I think.
I am surprised your solicitor didn't get a Utilities Questionnaire to the Seller (I am one and do this for my clients as standard so have names and references for all utilities at the property). You haven't exchanged yet, so you are entitled to ask for this information - get your solicitor to find out the info for you, it's her/his job!
Don't worry! It's all pretty easy stuff... the money bit is what scares me (am about to exchange for my own flat!)

Big deep breath and relax hun! House moving is always stressful but it will be fine...honest and thenyou can relax in your new abode :yay:
Phone and broadband - I guess you'll need your phone sorted first, however it might be a good idea to look at some of the deals with Talk Talk and Bulldog which have broadband included, they do seem cheaper than BT. If you want to go with them you phone them up, tell them the address and ask to have the phone connected from the date of moving in. If you do it through BT and a separate broadband supplier, for example your existing one, then you need to contact BT as above and ask them to connect you at the new address then they will give you the number and you ask your broadband provider to migrate you to that number.
However there may be a delay and there may be a charge for all of these things - sometimes for a couple of weeks
Gas / Electricity / Water - decide who you want to go with and call them and ask them to start billing from the day you move into the house. Remember to check the meters when you move in so that you know what they are on and don't end up being stung for the previous owners usage.
The "moving house" section onHouse (British Gas) is quite useful!
Good luck and congrats :yay:
