Child making a cup of tea
Hi I just wanted some input here, wanting to know if anyone thinks I am being a neurotic mother or not.
My sons father and I am no longer together, but he sees him every weekend. My son is 11 just coming up to 12 by the way. Well last weekend I was there collecting my son early in the morning, and his dad was in bed asking my son to make him a cup of tea!! My son as far as I am aware has never used an electric kettle before, and I was angry to say the least. To me he is to young.
Anyhow, did I other react? am I being over cautious? I am asking these questions, as yesterday my ex said he couldn't believe my reaction to this, and stated he's not a baby!
Thanks

No, I don't think you over reacted.
But I also agree with your ex that your boy is not a baby.
However, making tea requires working with boiling water and so it is something that either you or your ex need to teach him! He is old enough to make tea, but not "out of the blue". Teach him how to fill the kettle (do not overfill), how to turn the stove on and off, how to our the water and what to do if he ever spills boiling water over his hands or legs or whatever.
My daughter makes me tea and coffee, and she is only 9. It is nice to be surprised with a cup of coffee in bed every once in a while! If your son learns, he could do the same for you!
Just my two cents.

I completely agree with Karen. As long as he's been taught how to do it safely he's more then old enough to do that.
My 9 year old can make a cup of coffee. My son started cooking mac 'n cheese when he was 12.

i think it would be ok. Just make sure, i agree, just teach him, how to make it. I used to make tea/coffee, when i was in brownies. ( think that was about 10 i think) We learned about hot water, etc. I am now teaching my nephew, About making food, etc. (hes 7) and he knows the microwave already.

Thanks for your replies. I guess cause its just me and him at home, and he doesn't drink tea or coffee or asked for it, I just haven't got around to showing him how to use the kettle etc.
The thing that bothered me though was that my ex wasn't supervising him, and I agree with those who say that once shown how to do it safely, it should be fine, but because I haven't yet had a reason to show him how to use the kettle, I was concerned that his first attempt would end up as a serious accident.
Thanks
