Growing Pains

Do/Did your children have growing pains?

My 4 yr old (almost 5) DD tells me that her legs hurt and wants me to rub them. I have wondered if it's just that she want's attention from me and have told her that if she just wants mommy to let me know and i'll stop what i'm doing and read her a book or have a talk with her or whatever she wants to do but she insists that it's her legs. It's from her knees down to her ankles, not all of the time - only about once or twice every two weeks and mostly in the evenings. My DH thinks she is having growing pains and says he remembers his legs and arms just aching like crazy when he was little but I don't remember having that until I was about 10 or 12. She has been going through a phase where she is starting to tell little lies to get attention and get out of trouble and so she will tell me that her legs hurt really really bad and she needs me to rub them and she is crying but if something comes up that sounds fun she seems to be ok but doesn't really jump right up to go either. I'm confused!
So do you think that there is something that I should be looking for or do you think it could be growing pains like DH does?

Thanks for the help!

Hi....
I go through the same thing with my daughter, who is 7-1/2. Probably since she was 4 or 5 she gets pain in her calves every few months. I usually rub them or give her a nice warm bath; if it still bothers her I give her some Motrin and that does the trick. She is quite tall for her age (DH is 6 feet) and I think it definitely is growing pains. If her legs hurt on a continual basis or got worse, I would take her to the doctor. But since it is sporadic, I'm not too worried. I don't think you should be either. All part of growing up!! Hope this helps a bit.... :-)

i had really bad growing pains in my legs when i was little. they would wake me up at night. i would cry and cry with them. my mom always gave me childrens bayer chewable asprin and gave me a really warm bath. as i got older i used a heating pad. im 34 now and believe it or not, i still get them. 2 of my 4 kids also have them. i give them motrin. one of them wakes up in the middle of the night and the other doesnt. it started with my ds at 4 and my dd at 2 1/2.
you know your child better than anyone else. and shes the only one who knows for sure whether or not she lying. but, these pains are normally only at night.(from all the running and playing they have done during the day). or early evening. give her a spoonful of sprite(w/a touch a red food coloring or just plain) and see if they go away) if they dont, then try the motrin.
if it were me, id try a placebo first, just to get a reaction. that way id know if it was for the attention or not. however you go about it, keep me informed. im curious.

It's possible to get growing pains that young. Both of my parents are tall, 6'0 and 5'10, so naturally my brother and I growing up were off the charts. I started having growing pains when I was young and bothered me consistantly until I was 13. After 13 the pain subsided a lot, but now at 19, since I'm still growing (I know, it's crazy) I still get those groing pains, but now mostly in my knee area down just a little bit. When I was younger it was to my ankles. I wouldn't write it off as her wanting attention just because for you it didn't start until later.

Yes, my daughter's been through the same thing. I read that the growing pains aren't actually the bones, but the muscles that have been strained through the day. I don't know, but she WAS growing, and that's about the age she began, too. She's now 9 and rarely complains about them, except after she begins the soccer season!
