cashew allergy

hello to the mommies..i have to post this story about my son..he is about to be 3 in may..and has been eating peanuts for almost six months..i know they tell you not to give peanuts that early..but the first time he had eaten one he chewed them up well and loved them..well two days ago..at my grandma's house, she had given him 1 cashew..and then the scary reaction happened..first i thought he had a piece of nut stuck in his throat..he acted like he had to throw up..then he started with the bloody shot eyes..the really bad hives..and the wheezing of a cough...i couldn't believe he always eats peanuts and never has this happened..took him to the doctor for them to tell me he has a nut allergy..so now this week i am taking him to a allergy specialist to see exactly what he is allergic to..scared the bazzooka out of me...so now i am afraid to give him anymore peanuts..would love to know if any other moms' had something like this happen to their little ones..meaning can eat peanut have no reaction ..then eat a cashew and have a scary reaction...Gretchen

After eating nuts my whole life, I had a severe reaction to hazelnuts, and almost died.
When I got tested, I had suddenly become severely allergic to all nuts, including peanuts, and sesame seeds as well.
I would not risk his life by giving him peanuts before he is tested to see if he is allergic to them specifically.

A person can be allergic to some nuts but not others. My son has allergies to certain nuts: peanuts, cashews (really high result on this one), and pistachios. His results were negative for all the other kinds of nuts. We stay away from all nuts just in case.

I suggest that you get your son a RAST test (blood test) as this is the most accurate. Does he have an epi-pen yet? It sounds like he needs one immediately. Check all ingredients in things you buy also.

I went in for hazelnut allergy. I found out I was allergic to peanuts, sesame seeds, and all tree nuts, except for cashews, brazil nuts, and English walnuts. When I asked the doctor about cashews, she said that she would stay away from them. I will very likely be allergic to every nut upon the next exposure to any of those three.
