Second Grader Sent to Principal's Office
My eight yr old grandson's class was given a stack of magazines and told to "make a collage." So he and another boy cut out photos of women who have lost weight and were showing off in either their underwear or in bikinis.
So my GS was sent to the principal's office.
Do teachers have No idea that there are photos of scantily clad women in magazines now? I assume the boys were laughing about it, yes, but I think the teacher should have told them to make collages in a certain theme like a flower collage or springtime collage. Now I realize that women in bikinis are considered pornography in schools and photos of them are punished.
My daughter is upset about it but I admit to finding it quite humorous

I'll bet those little boys had fun doing it!
Seriously, what they did wasn't all that wrong, but maybe Mom could sit down and explain that in school you portray school acceptable types of things. Books, flowers, blah blah blah.
But you know what, what they did do was prove there's wayyyy to much stuff like that influencing young minds. If little boys pick up on how important "the perfect body" is - you can bet little girls do!

hi, I talked with my grandson. He said the collage was to be "examples of gas, solids and water" or something like that, and that a "person is a solid."
So I said, "true; but did you have ANY THOUGHT that you might get in trouble if you pasted a lady in underwear?" and he said yes.
My husband said that what he did was entirely appropriate! and that the school made a big deal out of it because the teacher herself didn't know how she should react. So she reacted by sending him to the principal.

I agree with your husband.
If the teacher wanted to censor the collages, she should have started by censoring the materials she gave them. They did exactly what they were told to do, (with a "twist") and got punished for it.
Anyone who knows anything about 2nd grade boys would know that at least one of them would do this. The teacher sounds inexperienced to me. I'll bet she's more careful next time.

Well, he pushed the envelope with what he did, as most children (esp. boys) will do. I agree with the previous poster, the teacher sounds inexperienced. As a teacher myself, I would have had no problem handling the situation. However, I do agree that some type of "punishment" or "reprimand" would need to be done - even if it were just a lecture about behavior. They were being silly and it was inappropriate - but that is about it.
Boy, when he is an adult, he is going to laugh big time at this one. And let me tell you, I am sure the principal is laughing too! Afterall, it is funny to children at this age to see ladies in underwear! I am sure it won't be long until the Victoria Secret magazines end up under his mattress. LOL!
