5 yr old with diarreah for 11 days..help!!!
hi, my 5 year old boy has had diareah for 11 days now, hes going to the toilet up to 6 times a day and its coming out of his bottom without him realising around 3 times a day. hes been to the doctors twice and ive also phone another doctor but they dont seemed worried,they just told me what foods to feed him on . i have to take him back friday if its still no better.
he seems ok in himself,he was vomiting for one day and seems a little tired but thats it really.
does anyone have any ideas what could cause this to last so long???

Has he been on antibiotics? If he has been these can mess up his normal flora in his gut, just give him some yogurt. Actually, you can feed him yogurt anyway. After diarrhea for that long his normal flora need some help. I would feed it to him everyday until he is way past normal. If it makes his diarrhea worse he might need the plain yogurt with no sugar (sugar makes diarrhea worse).

did they even bother to actually do any type of bloodwork on him while he was at the doc appt?this could be some sort of a viral thing similar to like the roto virus?or some other virus he picked up along the way.at this point tho i would really be concerned about the possibility of dehydration setting in.is he taking in alot of fluids?this really IS crucial.i think you should really take him back to the doc and demand that they just check out his basic metabolic panel to make certain he is not suffering the effects of this non stop diarrhia(it wouldn't hurt either to do a check on his liver and kidneys as well).it can just really throw off alot of his basic body chemistry and deplete very important vitamins and minerals that maintain normal bodysystem functions.but he does need a repeat visit since this is not getting any better.i hope he feels better soon.please keep us posted on how he is doing.Marcia

does anyone have any ideas what could cause this to last so long??? my little boy had those symptoms when he was a baby and it was so distressing. he had the cryptosporidium virus. there was some sort of bug that got into the water system. im not saying your child could have this but your doctor could have at least taken a stool sample

it sounds like a stomach bug, the doctors should of been more helpful to you Grated apple helps stop diarrhoea and carbohydrates.
