8 yr old/soils underwear/bm like glue
I have a very active 8 yr old boy, that has a problem of soiling his underpants saying it just comes out. When is was a baby/toddler he had a problem of holding his bm's and it was a nightmare when he went. We went through a very hard time. I am wondering if maybe him holding them when he was little did some damage to his muscles and now they can't hold the bm's in? He usually has watery bms but is not sick. Sometimes they are like glue (very hard to get off the toilet). He seems to explode everytime he goes also. He is very healthy and eats most everything. I am wondering is anybody else has experienced this and what I can do?
Thanks for you response in advance.

Camp, my children did this a few times when they were holding in their BMs. It then just comes out and they cannot control it because it should have come out earlier than this. Maybe talk to him and see if he is still holding his BMs.

It is possible that your son is having problems with the muscles in his rectum. But, is it at all possible he has other issues such as spastic colon or IBS? Does he ever complain about stomach aches at all? Also, does he ever complain of pain in the upper right side of his abdomen?
Something just doesn't seem right if his bowel movements are mostly the consistency of glue or are "tarry". It might be a good idea to have him seen by a good pediatric GI doctor for further evaluation, as there may be some digestive type of thing, or gallbladder issue going on causing the loose bowels.
Good luck sweetie. Please keep us posted.

Ozzybug,
Thanks so much for your reply. Because he has had the issues when he was young with holding his bm's I really think it has something to do with his muscles not able to hold it in. I have asked him if he is holding it again, and he tells me that he is not. I have seen him run to the bathroom to go, and I really do believe him that he is not holding anymore. He tells me that sometimes it just comes out. He does complain of stomach pains at nighttime before he goes to bed, of course at times we think he is doing it just to prolong going to bed, but when you say that it makes me wonder. I have always thought it was very strange about the consistency of his bm's and like I said before, sometimes he explodes when he goes to the bathroom and I can't get it off of the inside of the toilet. I have clorox wipes that I use and it is very hard to get off. He has had normal bm's, but the consistency and the loose, watery stools are much more often. Because he doesn't really act sick I really haven't thought much about it. I did tell him that maybe we need to have the Dr. look at him because of him not being able to control it coming out. Thank you for reading my post and telling me what you think. I do think it is time that I contact a pediatric GI Dr. and see what they say. I will keep you posted.

Campark,
It the poop also very smelly (more so than poop normally would be) and it is very dark?
Not that it matters much but those would be other signs of constipation.
The fact that he can't feel it, the fact that he soils and the fact that the poop is very sticky...I would go to a pediatric gastroenterologist and request an X-Ray. He is 8, this has been going on for a while, he complains about stomach pain. All of this points to encopresis, or at least leaking because of the constipation. He might have an impaction, and you will need help dealing with it.
My daughter (9) has enco.
Let me know if you need more information.
