? about my 18 month old grandson

Hi, my grandson was to the doctor today for a cold. The doctor said that his head is too large and he needs a scan done. Does anyone know what this might be? I of course am concerned. Thanks for any help.

Did he see a new doctor? It is routine for docs to measure their heads the first 2 years of visits. If he's had a bigger head I'd be surprised that the doc hadn't said anything before. If there has been a usdden increase in size, then yes, there would be a cause for concern. The scan is not that uncommon. It may be nothing, but when a doc sees the head growing rapidly they need to check it out. My son was well off the carts in head size for the first 2 years of his life. He was closely monitored to make sure the rate of growth never had a big jump in growth. He never had to have the scan, but it was mentioned that he might need it several times. Did your grandson's doc say what percentile he had been and what it had jumped to?
Answers:

My son said during his check-ups they said his head was a bit large(do not know the percentile) but no concern was mentioned at that timne. It was only mentioned this past week. So I am not sure why it was not a problem only to become a concern this week???
Answers:

His head may have grown a lot in the amount of time since he's last been to the doctor. If so, they'll want to check him for water on the brain. It has a correct term, but I can't remember how to spell it at the moment. He probably does not have that, but the doctor will want to do the tests just to be sure.

A really good friend of mine's son had to have this done, as did my cousin's child and the child of a lady on another board I visit. None of them had the condition. The doctor just wanted to be sure all was ok.

Probably precautionary. My son's head was always on the large side and at about the same age the Dr decided to do a CT scan for safety sake. I believe the main reason is to rule out hydrocephalus and tumors. It was quick and easy for my son and I was glad the Dr took the precaution. I was very concerned and scared, so I can understand how you feel right now, but if there are no other issues, then chances are it is just a rule out.. Best Wishes to you!!!
