Night Terrors

My Daughter has had a few of them, but not too many. She is 15 months. I was just wandering if any one else has had experience with them and how you delt with it. She had the worse one Friday night. It lasted for about 30 minutes and she never did wake up from it. She screamed and screamed. Her eyes were all glassy and she did not look like herself at all. Oh yeah, her eyes were open too, but she was not awake. I just held her and talked to her until it passed. Does any one have any ideas or suggestions. They are too frequent, but the last 2 were 2 weeks apart. All together she has only had 4 or 5. Thanks in advance for your input.

Years ago my brother was diagnosed with night terrors. I remember him standing in bed screaming, eyes open and fixed, sometimes thrashing if touched. I recall my father holding him tightly - as to nothing else to do. They took him to doctors of all specialties, incl. neuropathy. - no answers. As a last resort they took him to a dietician of some sort and was told to cut out all white flours of any sort - ex. breads. I don't recall if this was the CURE or of it just lessened the terrors. It's worth a shot. Try it for a few months and see if she does better. They also kept a log for years on his diet. They recorded every meal, drink, snack, and what each meal was prepared with. Lots of work but they still talk about how it helped. Hope this helps....

My little girl had night terrors for a while, a few months before she turned two. The doctor said it was from all of the rapid growth in her mind and body. I tried a little bit of everything but nothing worked. It seemed to happen when she was the most tired, but she had them even when she was well rested. Her ped did tell us that there wasn't really anything we could do about it. Sometimes, I would try to hold her and comfort her, but she would thrash so bad, she hurt me a time or two. I just made sure she was in bed, where she couldn't get hurt. She has since outgrown them.

My oldest son had night terrors. They must have been mild, because I don't even remember them, but my wife does.
We had a foster son who was 9 at the time. His were unbelievable. People say you are not supposed to wake the child up, or shake them at all. This boy was running out the front door, screaming at the top of his lungs, "You're killing me. Don't touch me. Why are you doing this to me?", and worse. We had to hold him, to keep him from running out into the street, and he was quick! In our heavily populated neighborhood, I was amazed no one called the police. While it was happening, it seemed like a scene out of The Exorcist, like he was totally possessed. My buddy witnessed one, and didn't come back over for a long time. It terrified him. My wife started snapping him out of it, by doing something completely irrational that he didn't understand, like clapping. It didn't happen much, and it didn't happen for long, but it was memorable. We had him for many months afterward, with no occurrences of it, after 3 or 4 in a short time.

My son started having them around a year and stopped for the most part around 2 he has had one since and he is 2 1/2 now. Everytime he had a big day and was very very tired before he went to bed. The 1st couple times I didn't know what was going on and almost took him to the hospital because he was so young I didn't think it was night terrors. I brought it up to the pediatrician and he seemed to dismiss it. He is fine now like I said his last one lasted about 10 minutes of glassy eyed screaming and when he came to it was like nothing happened. He will still sniffle for a while and I bet he has no idea why.
The best thing to do is make sure they don't get overtired. I seemed to aviod it all when he was napped and calm. Good luck.
