Cold sores/fever blisters

I am so angry right now. I met a nice mom who had a 2 year old boy. I have a 2 year old girl. She invited us to come play. We went to her house and the kids were playing kitchen with pretend food so of course they were putting the pretend food in their mouths (even though we told them not to.) Then we eat lunch and her son would bite something and give my daughter his food. She'd eat it. Well FINALLY the mother speaks up and says "my son has an active cold sore so maybe they should not do that." UGH! Why didn't she mention this when we first go there? He had a pacifier much of the time so I never saw the cold sore at first. Well now I am convinced my daughter will get colds sores from him. There's no way she did not get infected since they mouthed the same toys. I heard they can spread it to their eyes? How do you keep a 2 year old from touching it and then touching their eyes? IMPOSSIBLE! I am freaked out by this. Does any SP's here get cold sores? How often do they get them? How do you keep them from spreading it to other parts of their body (especially the eyes). The boy was on day 4 of the sore.

Very frustratating!! Unfortunately, if your daughter has caught the virus, she will have it for the rest of her life. It will remain dormant in her lip area and flare up in times of stress. My Dad gets them, I get them and and my older son gets them. There's nothing you can do about it. It can spread to the eyes (this happened to my husband - he required IV anti-viral drugs) so I guess you'll just have to be super vigilant with your daughter and tell her not to rub her eyes if a sore appears. However, the area around the cold sore will be mildly painful so I don't think your daughter will want to touch it. I really hope your daughter doesn't get these - my cold sores always magically appeared at the most inappropriate times, for example, while I was on my honeymoon or while I was on summer vacation. My son and I usually get them once or twice a year (in the summer time, mostly). And, my son always seems to get one right before his school pictures!
