wiping after a bowel movement.

My 5...almost 6 year old daughter refuses to wipe herself after a bowel movement. Is this normal? I feel like she is too old to need help with this. Any suggestions? I even bought her some of those flushable wet wipes for kids.

I told my kids that they had to start wiping their own rears when they turned 4-y-o because the law said so. Sure, I lied to them, but it worked.

You said she was almost 6, so use her birthday as the "right of passage" day for wiping her own bottom. Warn her now that on that day, she alone will be wiping and don't cave in if she asks you.

Thank you for your reply. That sounds like a good idea. I can totally understand having to wipe my 2 year old twin daughters rear-ends, but not my almost 6 year old.

This could be an attention thing with your 5 year old daughter. She sees you giving the twins attention by wiping them, sooooo.....she probably thinks that is one way to get mom's attention too. Kids will do anything for attention even if it is negative attention.

I do not know you, but it would be a good idea to stop and think about how much attention you give the 5 year old in comparison to the twins. Maybe spending more positive time with her would change things around for her.

It is so easy to get caught up with small children care that we sometimes do not spend enough time with the older children.

Just a thought.

Does your daughter go to kindergarten? If so, who wipes her there?

you know i have an almost 7 yr old son and an almost 4yr old daughter and i can't remember how i got my son to clean himself. he still seems to have a slight problem with how good he does it in fact sometimes it seems like he dosn't even wipe at all from the looks of his dirty undies. yuk, it makes me so mad when he does that.
i think that i am going to follow mitpatsmoms advice and when she turns 4 i am going to help her learn to clean herself. i really like the new wipes that have come out so we'll probably go and get her some "special ones".
i also have a 5 month old daughter so i think i will forget again when it comes to her turn, we'll see.
goodluck and keep us posted on your progress.
