I'm curious as to the age most children start talking........

It was been a WHILE since I've had a toddler and can't remember exactly what age to expect words. My grandson is 18 months age and can only say a couple of words (Mama, Dada, Bubba, Papa, Nana) that's about it. He won't even attempt to copy a word and seems to say the same word for a lot of things. I was told that they should be saying about 40 words at this age. Is there a problem? Should I say anything? I don't want to be a meddling Grandma.

My daughter is 21mths and like your grandson has a very limited vocabulary but understands everything we say to her. All kids develop at their own pace, some will talk very well and not have good motorskills (ie running, catching etc) and some will have really good motorskills and be a bit slow in talking, that is what I have noticed with my own children and others. By the time they go to school they are generally at the same stage.
