Bottle Rot
My daughter turned two in July and almost every night she goes to bed with a sippy cup of milk. (about half to 3/4 full) Every once in a while it's a little bit of juice with mostly water. I've been reading up on bottle rot and her teeth seem fine. I brush them every day and she takes a kid's vitamin. However, I do want to switch to something else. She won't touch water now, but I thought about the flavored water or crystal light. Any ideas?

From what I've heard and read, kids shouldn't fall asleep with any liquid in their mouth. If she's falling asleep sucking on a sippy cup, it can affect the jaw development. And milk or juice can cause tooth decay. I would try to nix the whole night time drinking habit.

I know a lot of people don't like to think of pacifiers at this age but if it will help your daughter get to sleep and she only takes it at night I would try it. It's better than milk or juice before bed. Not only could she have tooth or jaw problems, but she could also choke very easily. ...something to think about. Good luck!

Since she's two, she's old enough to talk to. Tell her that it's bad for her teeth and that there will be no more juice/water or anything else after brushing her teeth.
Make teeth brushing a fun time right at bedtime and then put her to bed. It may take a couple nights but who says she needs to go to bed with anything?

RE: bottle rot
I just want to say that my son always went to sleep with milk in a sippy cup or bottle also and ended up with 3 cavities(front teeth). At first it looked like his teeth had a white film right near the gum line, well this was the very beginning of decay. He had trouble going to sleep with nothing until I showed him a picture of teeth that had turned black due to going to sleep with a drink.(I got it from the dentists office in a pamphlet describing baby bottle decay) Not only did he agree to stop the cup, he also started to brush his teeth all the time where it used to be an ordeal!
