chronic anal fissure bleeding after bm 16 month old
Hi I have a 16 month old son and in over this past summer when he was about 9/10 months old he had some constipation issues which resulted in a fissure. He would always scream during the bm and it would be streaked with blood. I called his pediatrician and they told me to increase fiber in his diet which I did. After experimenting with many different high fiber foods and even benefiber, we found that the new brand of tropicana oranje juice with added fiber works the best out of anything for him and we no longer have problems with constipation, but he still bleeds occasionally after bm.
Since he doesn't bleed as much anymore and he doesn't scream the way he used to, I thought that he was ok but was changing his diaper today and I noticed when wiping him that I could actually see the tear, which I though was gone! I feel so bad for the poor little guy I can't imagine what it must feel like to have a bms over the past 7 months with that thing.
Well anyways I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this or any useful advice or information to share? It would be appreciated!

PleasE call your pediatrician and it sounds like he needs to see a pediatric GI specialist. This needs to be evaluated further.
Good Luck.

Hes going in on the 8th for a checkup to and thankfully his regular pediatician is not available so he's going to see a different and hopefully more competent one.
I am definitely going to bring this up AGAIN to them then.

Bring it up over and over, as much as you have to! And if this doctor won't really deal with the issue then have him see a different one again.
My son had major constipation problems for several months also (at about the same age as your son). He never bled but it would literally take an hour sometimes of him constantly crying to get a BM out. He would push to hard and get so red that I was afraid he was going to pass out or have something burst. We took him in to the doctor several times and they just kept telling us the same things over and over and over: "Increase fiber, increase fluids," etc. We DID those things and he was still having problems. Finally they prescribed a liquid laxative, which I later learned isn't even supposed to be given to babies his age and when I told a different doctor that he was taking it, she sounded very surprised that he would have been prescribed that.
Anyway, we eventually ended up finding an orange juice, too, that really helps. We also try to get him to eat lots of ruffage. But like I said, he never got a fissure from the constipation (which amazes me). It broke my heart to see him crying and straining that hard to try to go... I can only imagine how horrible it is for you and your son. Best of luck to you! Don't give up! Be persistant.

Thanks! It's funny that the oj seems to do the trick but other things don't. I'm sorry that you had to go thought this with your son as well. It seemed like the other things like apple juice and pears worked the first few times and then had no effect, almost like he built up a tolerance. But the OJ works every the time. If Tropicana only knew, lol!
