depo-provera?
Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone here has gotten the deop shot? I'm on ortho micronor right now for painful periods but it hasn't helped at all. I have been on ortho micronor for a little over 3 months. I see my GYN in a few days and she has mentioned depo before and so I just wanted to know what someone who has been on it thinks of it.
Thanks!

I was on Depo for 2 years, and it was the biggest mistake I ever made. I had NO problems whatsoever prior to using Depo. I began it after having my first child and instantly my periods stopped, which is normal. I didn't have a period at all during the 2 years I was on it. I stopped it after 2 years because I wanted to have another child. A year and a half later I finally had to see a specialist cause my period never returned and I was going to need help getting pregnant. I was put on fertility drugs and after 4 months, I did conceive. Those 4 months that I was on fertility drugs were the ONLY months during the first 5 years after Depo that I had a period. So you may as well say that my period did not return until 5 years after I stopped taking it. Not only that, but it took til 9 years after Depo before my periods returned to normal.
During all this, I was diagnosed with PCOS (which my doctor, who is a very reputable specialist from Mayo Clinic, attributed to my Depo use) and I was also diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I also gained 50 pounds within the first 6 months of being on Depo.
Horrible decision for me. Not everyone experiences what I do, BUT many people will tell very similar stories to mine, which in my opinion makes Depo a very risky option to even consider because my health problems will be with me for life and can lead to very serious health issues such as cancer, heart disease, etc. I'm almost positive that I would not be in this boat had I chosen a different method of birth control.
I'm not telling you whether or not you should take it, I'm just letting you know that you risk walking in my shoes for life if you choose to. Good luck.

I think it's also very important to note the loss of bone density issue that ALL women face when using Depo.
Regardless of any of the other side effects, which mostly do but may not happen to women on Depo, the loss of bone density happens to EVERY woman who uses Depo.
If you know anything about osteoporosis in women, loss of bone density is a very crucial and negative side effect which can cause very brittle bones later in life. Well, actually, not even that much later. Women in their late 30s and early 40s have reported brittle bones and very frequent fractures after having been on Depo for any length of time.
In any case, due to all of the serious health risks associated with Depo, there are a great many doctors who refuse to prescribe it to their patients any longer. These are the smart doctors who have read the research and seen first hand how badly Depo can screw up a woman's life, and they have decided it's better not to introduce such a harmful substance into their patients.
I would strongly advise against using Depo. For the reasons Barton stated above as well as everything I have posted here. But if you don't agree and you decide to get it anyway, then be prepared for perhaps the most unhealthy and negative thing that you could ever possibly do to your body from a birth control standpoint.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm definitely going to think twice before I go on depo, but I really want to stop my periods. I'm in college and its difficult for me to do normal things because my period pretty much runs my life. I have passed out in class before because I was on my period and bleeding to much. I was on yasmin for a couple of months but it only made my periods worse and then I tried another bc pill but I don't even remember what it was called because the first day I took it I was throwing up all night so I stopped taking that. Are there any other safe birth control methods that would stop my period completely?

As far as stopping your period, Depo may not do that. It seems that either your periods stop completely, or you are NEVER rid of it. Some ppl will continuously bleed for months before it'll even break.
Also, have you ever thought that it isn't healthy to stop what nature intended? Stopping your period isn't recommended for long periods of time. It is ok if you stop it for a couple of months at a time, but that is about it.
