question about ortho tri-cyclen lo

what are your experiences? my doc just put me on this. i start in a few weeks.
I'm scared, never took BC before. Did you gain weight? Or lose your sex drive?,,my two major concerns.
Answers:

My major side effect was breakthrough bleeding...eventually I was having light bleeding or spotting 3 weeks of every month--major pain, plus absolutely no sex drive.

oh i see,,,hm,,,well I am thinking off FAM, as well. I have an ovulation test and I bought a thermometer today so...Is FAM that hard. (i think you are using that right?) u posted it before,,,i think it was you,,,sorry if i have u confused with someone else...
Answers:

No, I am using FAM, I really like it. It takes a couple cycles to learn your body, but after that, it is so nice to know exactly where in your cycle you are. I don't use ovulation tests though. They can be difficult to read and just because it is positive, it doesn't mean you will ovulate, just that your body is gearing up for it. Really, you just need a basal body thermometer (these are more sensitive than fever thermometers). You should try to read the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility"; there is also a lot of info about FAM online if you search fertility awareness method. There are some low fertility days at the start of each cycle, but just to be safe (and because my cycles are still adjusting after BCPs), we use condoms until I ovulate (condoms PLUS withdrawal on the most fertile days) then no condoms once I'm sure I've ovulated. The great thing about this is my sex drive is intact, plus I still get my natural arousal fluid (which the pill totally dried up). I think my husband especially looks forward to the days after ovulation... He is much happier to use condoms half my cycle and have me sane and with a sex drive than moody, depressed and psycho with no sex drive like I was a lot on the pill. I don't think he would even support me if I announced wanting to go back on the pill, that's how big the difference is!

You can start temping even if you're in the middle of your cycle...it will give you some idea of your temperature ranges (though they can vary somewhat cycle to cycle). But almost always, I notice my basal temperatures are in the 97s before ovulation and after ovulation, they are above 98 degrees. Also, you should observe your cervical mucus for fertility--most fertile CM resembles uncooked eggwhite, it's very stretchy. CM is usually dry or sticky right after your period, then creamy white or yellowish (texture resembles lotion), then the eggwhite around ovulation (in a typical 28 day cycle this is around day 14), then it will dry up but you may have a little now and then before your period. I especially will get a little similar to the eggwhite stuff 2-3 days before my period starts. It is best though to use a barrier method like condoms until you have 1 or 2 cycles under your belt and are able to pinpoint your ovulation.
