Adoption within the family ??'s
I don't know which board this really belongs on so I thought I would put it here. Sorry if it's in the wrong place.... Here is the issue. My sister is almost 8 weeks pregnant with her 4th child. She is single and only the first 2 children share the same father. Her children are 11,8, and the last one turned 1 on the 17th of this month. She has decided that she does not want this baby. She is considering abortion which our family has always strongly disaggreed with. She has even had strong feelings against it in the past. Now she feels that a new baby would ruin everything for her and simply wants to go on with the three kids she has.
I have tried to talk her out of is based on how I feel about the whole thing. I have offered, after talking to my DH of course, to adopt the baby once it is born. This will be 5 children for me but this is a very important issue to me that this baby stays in our family.
Does anyone know how interfamily adoptions generally work? Is this even a realistic goal? Our whole family agree's that one more baby is simply more than she can, or wants, to take on. Any insight would be appreciated

What have you decided on this. I might have a helpful solution.

As an adoptive mom I am strong supporter of adoption so had to offer my opinion. I think this would be great if she truly does not want to raise the baby and you and your DH (along with the rest of the family of course) is in agreement. She will have to make the decision first about surrendering her rights. Once she decides that is what she wants to do you would need to contact an attorney who does adoptions. I would definately not do anything without consulting one. Your attorney can advise you how to proceed from that point on. Our adoption was through foster care so it was not a family adoption, but my former principal and his wife adopted his sister's baby several years ago and it has worked out beautifully for them. Should she decide to place the baby for adoption and you decide you cannot adopt the baby, keep in mind that many adoptions are now done in an "open" fashion and the biological family can receive regular updates and pictures along with periodic visits. Good luck!
